O people, my eyes have glimpsed

A fire of ignorance in the sky.

    It follows clouds heaped high,

Which follow a stirred-up dark haze,

That raises a wind upon the earth

    And whips up dust there.

    تُبْقي الأديبَ حِمارا

    It finds the strong man struck down;

It leaves the man of letters an ass.

Because of it, the open sky is darkness,

And because of it, the people are drunk.

It has indeed bequeathed them dizziness

And left them with a hangover.

Because of it, a person cannot tell

Whether he has seen night or day.

    He takes every shadowy figure

That passes robed by night for a mouse.

O people, you have hurried along,

    With great strides backward.

You cast away knowledge as one casts away the

Date pits, in hatred and contempt.

    تَخَذْتُموهُ شِعارا

    You wore ignorance as a robe;

You made it your inner garment.

O people, why do I see you

Settled in ignorance as your home?

You squandered the glory of a people

    Who raised life to glory.

They kept the sky of noble achievement

A beacon through the light they shed.

They wove for you a robe of honor,

Which you took off in contempt.

    Then you put on

A garment of disgrace and shame.

Oh, if only my people would listen

    To what I say aloud!

O poetry, you have made yourself heard, but

    My people—I see them drunk.

    So do not mind if

They turn away from your call.

And be patient with what you face,

And speak out—may you be spared stumbling!
