    Morning came singing

    To drowsy life.

And the hills dream in the shade

    Of swaying branches.

And the east wind sets dancing the petals

    Of withered flowers.

    And the light glided through

    Those dark mountain passes.

    Morning came, beautiful,

    Its splendor filling the horizon.

Then the flowers and birds stretched,

And the waves of the water.

    The living world has awakened

    And sung to life.

    So awaken, O my lambs,

    And come, O sheep.

And follow me, O my sheep,

    Among the flocks of birds.

And fill the valley with bleating

    And frolic and joy.

And hear the whisper of the watercourses,

And inhale the fragrance of flowers.

    And see the valley, veiled

    By the luminous mist.

And pluck from the earth's herbage

    And its fresh pasture.

And hear my reed pipe singing

    In honeyed song.

A melody rises from my heart

    Like the breaths of roses,

Then soars, flying like the nightingale,

    The happy songster.

And when we come to the forest,

    And the trees cover us,

Then pluck whatever grass you wish,

    And flowers and fruit.

The sun has suckled it with light,

And the moon has nourished it,

And it has drunk its fill of drops of shade

    In the hour before dawn.

And frolic as you please in the valleys,

    Or upon the hills.

And lie down in their spreading shade

    If you fear fatigue.

And chew the grasses and the thoughts

In the silence of the shadows.

    And hear the wind singing

    Among the mountain peaks.

Indeed, in the forest are blossoms

    And sweet grasses.

    The bees sing around them

    Joyous songs.

Their pure fragrance has not been sullied

    By the breaths of wolves.

No, nor has the fox roamed there

    Among some companions.

    And sweet fragrance and enchantment,

    And peace and shade,

And a breeze with an enchanting step,

    Abounding in coy charm,

    And branches—the light dances

    Upon them, and beauty too,

    And everlasting greenness

That the nights do not erase.

You will not grow bored, O my lambs,

In the sanctuary of the shady forest.

For time in the forest is a playful child,

    Sweet and beautiful.

And time among people is an old man,

    Grim-faced and ponderous,

    Strolling in boredom

    Across those plains.

In the forests you have your pasture

    And your lovely roaming;

And for me, singing and playing music,

    Until late afternoon.

So when the shadows of the grass lengthen,

    Tender and small,

Then come, let us turn our course back

    To the noble settlement.
