May God hallow the memory of that morning,

enchanting, in the shade of a lovely forest.

    There the breeze danced drunkenly

over the roses and the dew-moistened plants.

And mountain mist flowed with a gentleness

wondrous, over the meadows of the plains.

And the shepherds' songs fluttered in the hollows,

and the plain, the uplands, and the hills.

And the expanses of the air were fragrant with melodies,

    and perfume and lovely light.

And the lovely angel, amid basil

    and grass and shady oaks,

sang with the sparrows in the forest

and gazed at the languid mist.

And the angel's tresses danced with blossoms,

and light and the gentle breeze.

An enchanting dream the forest dreamed—

    ah, for its honey-sweet dream!

Like a vision appearing to the poet-artist

in the rapture of sublime imagination.

I savored its enchantment at leisure,

    with tenderness, delight, and wonder.

Then I called out when enchantment overflowed

through the reaches of my secluded heart:

O tresses, swaying in the forest amid

basil, light, and the dew-laden breeze,

fetter me with these loosely hanging locks,

in the spell of weary coquetry.

Fetter, O chains of love, my thoughts

and the dreams of my wayward heart.

Fetter me with all the perfume within you,

    and sacred, unknown enchantment.

Fetter me, for the artist becomes

free only in fetters such as these.

I wonder how many lie amid your black waves

and the folds of your trailing night:

    dead loves with gilded crowns,

    and shackled, fettered hearts,

    and flowers of wishes, withering

    in pallor, disappointment, and languor.

You do not know, nor does the night know

how many lie slain within its darkness.

You are the breeze's swing, so sway

with the happy breeze in every direction.

And let the sun and sky fashion

for you a crown of lovely light.

And let the blossoming boughs cover

you with the petals of their dew-wet roses.

You belong to the lovely rays and to the breezes

and the flowers: play, and prolong your play.

O bride of the mountains, O rose of hopes,

    O enchantment of sublime existence!

Would that I were a flower swaying

    among the folds of your lustrous hair;

or a butterfly, circling you spellbound,

    drowned in my rapture and wonder;

or boughs, bending over you with my leaves,

    with the tenderness of one love-crazed and love-worn;

or a breeze, gently clasping your breast

    to my slender, throbbing breast.

Ah, how beauty gladdens and torments

so many poetic hearts and minds!
