You have settled in the gardens of Eden.
Gardens of Eden—you have settled within them;
You have prospered; so may success gladden you.
You have prospered, so may that prosperity be your joy.
حَلَلتَyou have settled فيهاin them مَحَلَّthe abode of برٍّa righteous man

You have settled there in a righteous man's abode,
You have taken your place there among the righteous,
Whose deeds are adorned with righteousness.
He whose deeds are ornamented by piety.

Their youths greeted you and said:
The immortal youths of Paradise greeted you, saying:
Glad tidings for you: in them are repose and wine.
"Good tidings to you: here is eternal rest and wine."

أَتاحَbrought about ليfor me حَينُكَyour death المُتاحُdestined
Little beloved of my soul, what a calamity
O beloved of my soul, what a calamity
Your destined death has brought upon me!
Your destined death has brought upon me.

لَمdid not يَقِهاward it off الدِرعُarmor وَالسِلاحُand weapons
Time waged against me, through you, a war
Fate has waged a war against me over you,
That armor and weapons could not ward off.
Against which neither shield nor weapon could avail.
حَكَّمتgave dominion to العَينُthe evil eye فيكَover you ضُرّاًaffliction

يَعتَلُّfall ill مِنfrom ذِكرِهِits mention الصِحاحُthe healthy
The evil eye gave affliction dominion over you;
The Evil Eye decreed harm upon you,
The healthy fall ill at its mention,
A harm the mere mention of which sickens the healthy.
حَتّىuntil ذَويwithered رَوضُكَyour garden المُنَدّىdew-moistened

وَاِربَدَّand grew dusky مِنfrom وَجهِكَyour face الصَباحُthe dawn
Until your dew-moistened garden withered,
Until your dewy garden withered away,
And the dawn of your face grew dark.
And the morning brightness of your face turned ashen.

My garden, where are my pomegranate blossoms
O my garden, where is my pomegranate blossom?
And the lovely eyes of the narcissus?
And where are the beautiful eyes of the narcissus?

You were adorned as an image in every eye;
You cast a meaning of beauty upon every eye,
Its flowing water is begged of you.
Whose flowing source is drawn from you.
حقَّis warranted لِيَfor me القَرحُgrief غِبتَyou have gone عَنّيaway from me
وَلَيسَand there is not ليfor me غَيركَother than you اِقتِراحُa wish
Grief is my due: you have gone from me,
Deep grief is my due now that you are absent,
And I have no wish for anyone but you.
And I have no desire other than you.
حرِّمتُI forbade نَوميmy sleep عَلىto جُفونيmy eyelids
وَهوَand it حَلالٌlawful لَهاfor them مُباحُpermitted
I have forbidden my eyelids sleep,
I have forbidden sleep to visit my eyelids,
Though it is lawful and permitted to them,
Even though it is lawful and permitted for them.

Save for a brief doze, in which appears
Save for a fleeting slumber wherein visits
A dream-vision by which wounds are healed.
A vision of you, by which my wounds are healed.
حاوَلتُI sought لُقياكَmeeting you مُذfor زَمانٍa time
لَيسَthere is no لَهُfor it بِالمُنىwith wishes سَماحُgenerosity
For some time I have sought to meet you,
I have sought to meet you for a long time,
A time that is not generous with wishes.
But Time is not generous with such desires.
حَضَرتَyou are present أَوor غِبتَyou are absent ماnot لِقَلبيfor my heart

Whether you are present or absent, my heart has no
Whether you are present or absent, my heart finds
Solace except in remembering you.
No comfort except in the remembrance of you.
حَسبيenough for me بِلُقياكَin meeting you فيin ضَميريmy inner thoughts

It is enough for me to meet you in my thoughts;
It suffices me to meet you within my soul;
Your home is my heart; there is no departure.
Your dwelling is the heart, never to depart.
