فَفاضَ جَفني بِما أَفضى إِلى يامِ
You have given my eyes Ham in place of Sam, O Eid;
Oh Eid, you have exchanged my gaze from peace to burning grief, / And my eyelids have overflowed with a flood deep as the sea.
so my eyelids overflowed with what reached Yam.
I was already wandering, anxious, stripped of endurance, / And you have doubled my worry and my distraction.

فَزِدتُ ضِعفَينِ في هَمّي وَتهيامي
I was already distraught, sorrowful, without endurance;
I once knew your white night to be radiant and bright, / So why has it blackened my eyes with darkness?
now I have doubled in sorrow and yearning.
Until I forgot the joy to which I was accustomed, / For the ugliness of one day makes one forget the beauty of years.

I knew your white night as radiant;
If only you could see me this morning as the crowds emerged, / A bereaved father weeping, while pains weep around me.
why has it lined my eyes with darkness?
I wore nothing but sorrow as a full coat of mail, / And I sacrificed nothing but my own bleeding eyes.

Until I forgot the joy I had grown used to:
Nor did I appear before my visitors, fearing that / I might offend them by lacking a cheerful, smiling face.
one ugly day makes the beauty of many days forgotten.
Or seeing one strutting in new robes, just as / My son used to strut in their likeness on the morning of Eid a year ago.

bereaved, weeping, with mothers weeping around me.
It is as if I never spoke to the brilliance within you, / Nor ever saw you standing there, filling my sight.

Nor heard you reciting the Remembrance at dawn, / With a voice like David’s, clear and full of zeal.
and sacrificed nothing but my bleeding pupil.
There were traits in you whose beauty delighted me; / They brought joy at the start, but alas, no joy at the end.

Praise be to God; it is justice concerning you, executed / By decrees that allow no undoing and no appeal.
a bright-faced, smiling one among them might grieve me,
I answer those who seek rulings on rare questions, / While my mind wanders distracted between highlands and lowlands.

Pondering meanings I used to hear from your mouth, / That baffled my intellect and my understanding.
my son wore on Eid morning a year ago.
I do not engrave your name on a signet ring out of passion; / My heart is more worthy of holding it than any gem.

Beloved of my soul, had I granted it its wish,
It is as if separation struck our union, / Isolating the Alif of longing from its Lam.
the archer would have struck my throat and missed yours.
My cure lay in my tears and in my own breath, / Until I was exposed by this flowing stream and rising flood.

Would that my tears flowed and my sighs were seen / In my solitude, fulfilling the duty of the mourning dove.

How often has your grave answered my melodies with a sermon, / And your visiting phantom stirred me in the night.

with David’s voice and a noble man’s eloquence.
Then I would have sought revenge, surrounded by a clamorous army, / Invading while the sea of death surged around it.

Signs of promise in you delighted me with their beauty:
With a decisive sword from the swords of God, unsheathed, / Sharp of edge, even if it does not cleave through skulls.
they pleased in their beginning, but not in completion.
But destinies came to pass and inflicted pain on this bereaved one, / Decrees against which every sharp blade becomes blunt.

When I contemplate those felled by death, I see no distinction / Between the vile hyena and the noble lion.
by destiny, whether undoing or binding.
Look to tomorrow: does the height of Jupiter protect it / From accidents, or the loftiness of Mars?

They shall both fall, and God will extinguish their light, / Even if the high star lingers for a time.
while my mind wanders between Najd and Tihama,
How truthful people would be if they said, when asked / About every life that has passed: "They were but fleeting dreams."

Man is but a letter, his life is its vowel movement, / And his lifespan ends like a faint sound or a silent gesture.
from your mouth, which bewildered my mind and understanding.
Abdul-Ghani—my father and my son—I have lost them both; / Time has oppressed me until I am terrified by the thirst.

Not on a ring do I engrave your name out of ardent love:
They were my two safe sanctuaries; so, oh woe, / I have exchanged my freedom for a state of sacred deprivation.
my heart deserves it more than a signet’s stone.
I have here neither a sanctuary nor a corner stone, / No intimate friend to befriend me, nor any protector.

We were like lam-alif: separation shattered its union,
This one was a replacement for that one; in him remained / The pride of my maternal and paternal kin.
leaving an alif alone in longing, parted from a lam.
He grew and resembled me in glory, and resembled him; / Thus the growing likeness stood in for his forebears.

My solace lay in my tears and sighs,
The bone had not yet set before it broke again—oh, the sorrow! / Nothing snatched away my blessings but my own transgressions.
until the flowing tears and surging sighs betrayed me.
I decreed for my son the attainment of his hopes, but / The decrees of my Lord refused all but the annulling of my decrees.

Would that tears flowed and sighs were visible
The minds of the world's children have gone astray; they cling / Within it to a rope of hopes that is frayed and rotten.
only in my solitude—more constant than any dove.
You weep over the world and because of it, while it laughs; / You are pleased with it, though it is the source of wrath and blame.

How often your grave answered my laments with admonition,
Fie upon it! It is a mother whose only kindness lies / In withholding mercy or severing the bonds of kin.
and your night-wandering shade stirred me with a visit.
Life is but a fleeting ware; those who lost were deceived by it, / And in their ignorance, they traded wisdom for mere dreams.

The light-burdened have won the ultimate good, while I am shackled / Behind them by the heavy weight of my sins and burdens.
gnashed my teeth or bloodied my thumb,
Why do I weep for my son, when sins will humiliate me / Tomorrow, while he dwells in glory and honor?

then taken vengeance, a clamorous army around me,
Should I not have wept for myself and the crimes I committed, / And asked those who blame me to share in my weeping?
marching to war as death’s sea surged around it,
There is no security but in Faith on the morrow, / And no safety for me except in my Surrender to God.

So that I may triumph with my son where God has settled him, / By a mercy from Him that I hope for, and a blessing.

But decrees took effect, tormenting one bereaved of you—
A promise upon the Chosen One that must be fulfilled; / Were I to swear upon it, God would validate my oath.
decrees against which every keen sword grew blunt.
They said, "Hold back your tears; did weeping ever restore / A child to the bereaved, or a kind father to orphans?"

When I contemplate those struck down by death, I cannot see myself
I said: "I forbid it, but sorrows command it to flow; / So how can the tear of the wandering, lovesick heart ever cease?"
distinguishing between a hyena and a lion.
I thought my eyes would heal my burning pain with weeping, / But they were only appointed to kindle the fire.

Your peers hovered around me like thirsty birds, / Though I used to see them keeping their distance.

They missed you and asked, "Where is our guiding star? / Where is the one who understood us without need for words?"
though the lofty luminary’s life be long.
So rise and look; the children have waited / For a promise from you of freedom and a feast.

And where is your strutting in the cherished robe, / When they went out trailing their garments and sleeves?

Abd al-Ghani—my father and my son—I lost them both;
By God, I shall not forget your fresh, youthful face, / Nor your eloquent mouth when others spoke clumsily.
Time oppressed me until I trembled before the oppressor.
Nor your reading of the chapters among them, / Recited with clarity and perfect intonation.

They were my two secure sanctuaries—alas,
How many meanings you deduced through deep understanding, / Until it was said, "He knows the exegesis of Ibn Salam."
woe is me! I exchanged freedom for sacred restraint.
How many hearts and bodies you have left behind, / Torn between deep longings and wasting sickness.

Here I have neither sanctuary nor stone,
Are we, in our grief for you, bodies without hearts? / Or are we hearts existing without bodies?

You outpaced your weary father, though his lean steeds / Were already prepared for the saddle and bridle.

We would have offered our lives for yours, had we seen a way / To ransom a soul from the flowing decree of fate.
and in you lived the pride of my maternal and paternal uncles.
But alas! The uncertainty of death cannot be warded off / From any mighty lion, nor from any great lord.

the growing likeness stood in for his two fathers.
This one is fallen, and that one lives for an appointed term; / This one is destitute, and that one is wealthy by lot.

No sooner had he mended the bone than he broke it anew—alas!
The best that man earns during wealth is gratitude for it, / And patience is his best gain in times of loss.
Nothing robbed me of my blessings but my own wrongdoing.
I have borne the trials of time with patience, except at the loss / Of a father and a son—may my soul be their ransom.

my Lord’s decrees insisted on undoing mine.
Upon them be the blessings of God, unceasing, / Along with my tears and the pouring rain from the clouds.

This, if the Lord bestows favor and blesses me
in those two treasures with steadfastness and inspiration,
لِكَيso that أَفوزُI may triumph مَعwith اِبنيmy son حَيثُwhere بَوَّأَهُHe lodged him

بِرَحمَةٍ مِنهُ أَرجوها وَإِنعامِ
so I may triumph with my son where He has lodged him,
through mercy from Him, which I hope for, and grace.

A promise through the Chosen One, certain to be fulfilled—and were I
to swear to it, God would make my oath come true.

They said: “Restrain your tears. Has weeping ever restored a son
to a bereaved parent, or a dutiful father to orphans?”

I said: “I forbid it, but sorrows command it;
how then can a distraught man’s streaming tears cease?”

Your peers hovered like thirsty birds
around me, yet I deemed them not to be circling.

They missed you and said: “Where is our Farqad star?
Where is our wisest, without needing to be taught?”

your promise of release and food.

until I recover, my tablets and my pens”?

in measured tones, with clear articulation and assimilation.

so people said: “He knows Ibn Sallam’s commentary by heart!”

You outran your weary father, while his lean steeds
stood ready for saddles and bridles.

come from the decree of One Almighty, all-knowing of the unseen.
