نَهب النُهى وَأَتى النَذيرُ بِوَعظِهِ

نَهب النُهى وَأَتى النَذيرُ بِوَعظِهِ

لَو أَنَّنا عَن غَيِّنا نَتَناهى

لَو أَنَّنا عَن غَيِّنا نَتَناهى

Reason has been plundered, and the warner has come with his admonition.

Reason has been plundered, and the warner has arrived with his admonition,

If only we would desist from our waywardness!

If only we would desist from our transgression.

وَإِذا اِصطَلَحنا بَعضَ يَومٍ لَم نَدم

وَإِذا اِصطَلَحنا بَعضَ يَومٍ لَم نَدم

فَكَأَنَّنا في المُبتَدا نَتَناهى

فَكَأَنَّنا في المُبتَدا نَتَناهى

And if we mend our ways for part of a day, we do not persevere,

And if we make amends for part of a day, we do not persist,

as though we come to an end at the very beginning.

As though we come to a halt at the very beginning.

إِنَّ الطَريقَة دونَ زادٍ وَعرةٌ

إِنَّ الطَريقَة دونَ زادٍ وَعرةٌ

وَإِذا تَزَوَّدنا فَما أَوطاها

وَإِذا تَزَوَّدنا فَما أَوطاها

Indeed, the path is rugged without provisions;

Indeed, the path without provision is rugged,

and when we take provisions, how smooth it is!

Yet if we take provision, how smooth it becomes!

مر بِالصَلاةِ وَلا تُضِعها وَاِصطَبِر

مر بِالصَلاةِ وَلا تُضِعها وَاِصطَبِر

تَكفيكَ سورَةُ مَريَم أَو طهَ

تَكفيكَ سورَةُ مَريَم أَو طهَ

Enjoin prayer, and do not neglect it, and persevere;

Enjoin prayer—do not neglect it—and remain steadfast;

Surah Maryam or Ta-Ha is enough for you.

Surah Maryam or Taha shall suffice you.
