ياO نورَlight of عَينيmy eye فَقَدتُهُI lost him
وَفيand in الفُؤادِthe heart وَجَدتُهI found him
O light of my eye, whom I have lost
O light of my eyes that I have lost
Oh light of my eye, whom I have lost, yet found dwelling within my heart.
and found within my heart!
Yet found him in my heart
Oh Star, for whose sake they named me the Full Moon on the day I begot him.
ياO كَوكَباًa star لَقَّبونيthey named me
بِالبَدرِas the full moon يَومَthe day وَلَدتُهI begot him
O star! They named me
O planet that they called me
His radiance guided my caravan but for a moment, before it faded and I laid him in the earth.
"the full moon" the day I begot him.
The full moon the day I begot him
Oh pure essence—all others proved counterfeit in my sight when I put them to the test.
لَمdid not يَهدِguide رَكبيmy caravan سَناهُhis radiance
حَتّىuntil خَباit died out فَلحدتُهso I buried him
His radiance had scarcely guided my caravan
His death did not calm my riding camel
Indeed, the 'beloved' who transgressed against me—I have renounced him.
when it died out, and I laid him in the grave.
Until it wept, so I buried him
I could not bear the sight of him in my home, so I cast him out.
ياO طَيِّباًpure one زافَproved counterfeit عِنديto me
سِواهُall besides him لَمّاwhen نَقَدتُهI assayed it
O pure one, counterfeit to me was
O sweetness that seemed good to me
I accused him, and by my Lord, were it not for piety, I would have exacted retribution.
all else, when I assayed it.
Nothing equals it when I lost it
How shall I bequeath my wealth to one who unraveled the glory I had knotted tight?
إِنَّindeed الحَبيبَthe beloved الَّذيwho قَدalready

Indeed, the beloved who has
The beloved who has rejected me
He is no son of mine who does not return my affection when I offer it.
wronged me—I have disowned him.
Unjustly I have rejected him
You are the noble one, yet Death refused to grant what I desired.
لَمdid not أَحتَملbear أَنto أَراهُsee him
بِمَنزِليin my home فَطَرَدتُهso I drove him out
I could not bear to see him
I could not bear to see him
The hand of Fate has untied a knot that I had once pulled tight.
in my home, so I drove him out.
In my house so I dismissed him
It lent you to me as a precious gem, then demanded repayment, so I returned it.
أَتهَمتُهُI suspected him فَوَرَبّيand by my Lord
لَولاbut for التُقىpiety لَأَقَدتُهI would have slain him in requital
I suspected him; and, by my Lord,
I blamed him, by my Lord
My Lord brought me joy through you, and He brought me sorrow, yet I praised Him.
but for piety, I would have slain him in requital.
If not for piety I would have destroyed him
Today, an arm of glory I had extended through you has fallen short.
وَكَيفَand how أَورِثُI bequeath ماليmy wealth
I had bound it
And how could I bequeath my wealth
How can I bequeath my money
After you, I lay awake through the night, though long had I been used to sleep.
to one who undid the glory I had bound fast?
To one who has broken a pact I tied
How often have I sprinkled the burning heat of my vitals with tears, seeking to cool it.
وَلَيسَand is not بِاِبنيmy son مَنone who لاdoes not

And no son of mine is one who does not
He is not my son, one who does not
You are the fresh water, yet you turned away just as I arrived to drink.
love me if I love him.
Love me when I loved him
Perhaps my little son will call out tomorrow when I seek him in the afterlife.
أَنتَyou النَجيبُthe noble one وَلكِنand yet
I desired it
You are the noble one, but
You are noble but fate refused
"Oh Lord, fulfill for the afflicted father the promise You made him through his child."
death refused what I desired.
What I wanted from you
So that God may forgive a sin I committed and repeated.

قَدalready كُنتُI had قَبلُbefore شَدَدتُهI tightened it
The hand of time untied a knot
The hand of fate has broken a pact
May God not let my reward be lost, for great is the grief I have endured.
I had once fastened tight.
I had tightly tied before
Is this the day of his demise, or is it the Day of Judgment I have witnessed?
أَعارَنيit lent me مِنكَof you عِلقاًa treasure
ثُمَّthen اِقتَضىdemanded it back فَرَدَدتُهso I returned it
It lent me, in you, a treasure,
You borrowed a connection from me
He was a son of nine years, yet I counted him among the wisest men.
then claimed it back, and I returned it.
Then demanded its return
Had I cast his intellect against Mount Thabir, I would have leveled it to the ground.

Rather, my Lord gladdened me through you
But my Lord has pleased me with you
I once opened my mouth to boast of him; what ails me now that I have silenced it?
and grieved me, so I praised Him.
And saddened me so I praised Him
He is the sharp sword—woe is me!—have I sheathed him in the grave?

Today an arm-span has shrunk
Today, people fall short
Life is no longer beloved; indeed, I have come to envy him his death.
that I had stretched in pride in you.
Of the pride in you I have extended
I was full of desire until he passed; now, what utter renunciation I have embraced.
سَهِرتI stayed awake بَعدَكَafter you لَيليmy night
وَطالَماand so often قَدindeed رَقَدتُهI slept through it
Since you departed, I have lain awake all night,
I stayed up after you, my night
My striving for his sake availed me nothing; how vain was my exertion!
though so often I had slept it through.
Is long whenever I put it to bed
My solitude suffices me now; would that I had been singular in good deeds as he was.

And how often I have sprinkled with my tears
And how often my tears have flowed
All loved ones have become insignificant to me; I push away those I once drew close.
my heart's burning—if only I could cool it!
Hotly over the gravel, cooling it
Abdul-Ghani was my true benefactor, granting me more than any wealth I ever acquired.

صَدَرتَyou departed حينَwhen وَرَدتُهI came to it
You are the sweet water, but
You are sweet but
Through his good fortune, whenever I set a trap for the lion, I ensnared it.
you departed just as I came to it.
You were hostile when I visited you
And never did I plant my hope in barren rock but that I reaped a harvest.

Perhaps my little son will call
Tomorrow, let Bunayy call
Oh my son, who was raising a structure of glory, though it was I who laid its foundation.
tomorrow, when I come to him:
When I head towards him
You brought me low the day you perished, casting me down from the height I had climbed.
ياO ربّLord وَفِّfulfill for المرَزّاthe bereaved man

"O Lord, fulfill for the man bereaved
O Lord, fulfill to Al-Mirza
The garment of my patience—I have already torn it to shreds over you.
of his child what You promised him."
What I promised his son
How I would love to make my resting place beside you, if only I could prepare it.
فَيَغفِرُthen will forgive اللَهَGod ذَنباًa sin

أَبدَأتُهُI first committed it وَأَعَدتُهand repeated it
Then God will forgive a sin
So God forgives a sin
Perhaps your nearness would heal my anguish, as I have always known it to do.
I first committed and then repeated.
I initiated and repeated
Indeed, by the Lord who guided me to His light so that I worshipped Him:
لاmay not ضَيَّعَlet be lost اللَهُGod أَجريmy reward
فَأَيُّfor what وَجدٍanguish وَجَدتُهI felt it
May God not let my reward be lost—
God did not waste my reward
My grief for you never subsided, but that my weeping only made it overflow.
for what anguish I have felt!
Which delight have I found?

The day of his death or the
the Day of Reckoning that I witnessed?
Day of Reckoning I witnessed it

Living is not good, I envy
have envied him his death.
Him for death that he attained
