O Abd al-Ghani, my son, to your Lord is the return,
So be my intercessor with Him who brought forth the pasture.
So be my intercessor before Him who brought forth the pasture.

For sins have bound me, and I have been plundered by
For sins have shackled me, and I was stripped bare
the onslaught of calamities that stirred up dust in their charge.
By a raid of calamities that stirred up a dust storm.

They kindled sparks of anguish within my breast,
They struck the flint of passion within my ribs,
and scattered my tears when they charged with them into a throng.
And scattered my tears just as they gathered in my eyes.

May God repay with evil a mother who made you an orphan,
May God repay the mother who orphaned you with evil,
and reward the bondwomen who treated you with kindness.
And reward the bondmaids who treated you well.

I lavished generous gifts to protect her,
I gave generous gifts to protect her honor,
but she sold you for her desires and claimed to have safeguarded you.
But she sold you for desires while claiming denial.

I placated her and chanted charms against her poisons,
I used to cajole her and charm away her venom,
though my deeds would poison even a viper,
Although my deeds were but poisoning a viper.

for your sake, fearing orphanhood, until she rebelled,
For your sake, I feared your orphanage until she rebelled,
and it was said, 'Leave her: she is a serpent that slithers.'
And I was told: "Leave her, for she is a slithering snake."

I have found that even the beauty most loving toward her husband
I have seen that the most loving of beauties to her husband
is discontent when he grows gray, and keeps no faith when he is absent.
Is displeased if he grays and careless if he is absent.
فَقُلso say لِلهَوىto desire حَسبيenough for me بِماwith what مَلَكَتpossesses يَديmy hand

So tell desire, 'What my hand possesses is enough for me,'
So say to passion: "What my hand possesses suffices me,"
even if I have exchanged pearls for onyx beads.
Even if I were to exchange pearls for glass beads.
أَلاindeed إِنَّماonly طيبُthe sweetness الحَياةِof life قَناعَةٌcontentment

كَفَت وَأَعَزَّت مَن يَرى ضيقهُ وسعا
Indeed, life's sweetness is only contentment,
Verily, the goodness of life lies in contentment;
which sustains and honors whoever sees abundance in his straits.
It suffices and ennobles him who sees his constraint as abundance.

أَلَستُ غَريباً لا رَبيعَ وَلا ربعا
After you, I have no pursuit but sorrow.
I have no ambition left after you but sorrow;
Am I not a stranger, with neither spring nor home?
Am I not a stranger, with no spring camp nor home?

No one who lives beside enemies takes refuge in pleasures,
He who neighbors enemies finds no refuge in pleasures;
his life made miserable by them, his endurance exhausted.
His life is made wretched by them, and his patience fails.

I struck the necks of days with you as a keen-edged sword,
I struck the neck of days regarding you with a sharp blade,
from whose edge swords themselves learned to cut.
From whose edge the swords learned how to cut.

I adorned the heaven of glory with you as a star,
I weighed the sky of glory against you, a star
with which I pelted eavesdroppers, driving them from that heaven.
With which I stoned those who sought to eavesdrop on it.

The evil eye indeed felled you, O lord of battle,
The evil eye cast you down—it was said to be a calamity
where you see men fallen from their saddles.
Wherein you see men thrown from their saddles.

Death waged war upon me through you, with blades
And hopes fought me over you with blades
that, when they strike, split the armor upon the champion.
That slice through the hero's armor when they strike.

Not even the mighty lion can protect his cub,
The fierce lion is no protector of his cub,
nor control harm or benefit for himself.
Nor does he possess power to harm or benefit himself.

I lost my father, the possessor of good, and my son, his namesake,
and could not shield myself or either of them.
And I could not ward off fate from myself or from them.

A beloved one—as though God, on the day of his death,
A beloved—it was as if God, on the day of his death,
folded the seven heavens for the appointed hour, or shook the seven earths.
Folded the seven heavens for the appointed time or shook the seven earths.

Had it not been Friday, I would have condemned that day,
Had it not been the Day of Congregation, I would have disparaged it,
just as it shattered my root and uprooted my branch,
Just as it destroyed my root and uprooted my branch.

It planted anxieties and decay within my body,
and rained blood and tears from the corners of my eyes.
And rained blood and tears from my eyes.

The enemies thought the bearer of your death-news distraught,
The enemies reckoned your death-announcer was distraught,
yet glory knew what a young man was being mourned.
While the heights knew which young man was being mourned.

Congratulations to you on the great victory of a Paradise

In the neighborhood of God's Messenger, fruitful and ripe.

With thornless lote-trees and bananas layered in clusters.

You went ahead, O Abd al-Ghani, while sins delayed
your father—sins that, when he prays, thrust him farther away.
Your father; sins which, if he calls out, increase his supplication.

So take my hand or ask God for His pardon for me;

You will find Him generous, answering when He is called.

In excellence I stand alone, as my enviers admit,
I am singular in my merit, by the admission of my enviers,
and had you lived, we would have been a pair in our virtues.
And had you lived, we would have been a pair in our virtues.

I wished you would attain your desires, but hopes failed—
the hopes that showed me, in you, flashes of their lightning.
Hopes that showed me a flash of their lightning regarding you.

Did the days appoint me, then change their mind?
The days granted me authority, then it seemed best to them to change,
How close dismissal was to my appointment!
So nothing was closer to my rule than deposition.

The robe of youth and its embroidery did not clothe me
my son's adornments, before it demanded that I take it off.
With the ornaments of my child, before death demanded it back.

He would have narrated from me the Quran, poetry, and law.

And he would have critiqued me in every praise I wove
for people I call nab‘ wood, though they are Arabs.
For people I name, who are Arabs by origin.

I read the meters of Al-Khalil, yet I would not
have studied them had I shared his natural gift.
Have read them had I resembled him in nature.

He almost—though he had not studied grammar as a lad—
explain its accusative, genitive, and nominative cases.
Could explain its accusative, genitive, and nominative cases.

And he would gift me pearls of wisdom from his mouth,
and kindles against me, from his mind, a searing fire.
And strike fire against me from his sharp intellect.

From the heaven of high honors its crescent has fallen,
The sky of highness—its crescent moon fell from it,
and the white nights have turned dark in my eyes.
So the white nights turned dark and black in my eyes.

And how many favors, full-uddered, flowed because of him?

I, now that he is dead and I have laid him in the earth,
I am now, when he has perished and I have deposited him in the earth,
and Death has left a rift in the branches of high honor,
And death has left a crack in the tribes of glory,

The solace of my desires has gone—oh, my sorrow!
The intimacy of my desires has passed, so oh my sorrow,
And oh, my anguish! How desolate sorrow and anguish are!
And oh my anxiety—how desolate are sorrow and anxiety.

And I was not an innovation among its virtuous ones.

It were in my eye, I would not hear the footfall of its seasons.

One who has not suffered what I have suffered bids me be patient,
He consoles me who has not found what I found,
yet in my heart is a rent I cannot patch.
While in the heart is a tear I cannot patch.

Did not death hunt from you the chick of a falcon

That turns gray hawks into spotted crows?

I placed you under the earth, while Glory was humiliated,
though even above the stars I would not have been content to place you.
Though even above the stars, I would not have been satisfied with your placement.

You were like the crop that brought forth its shoot
which strengthened it—but Death struck the crop.
And strengthened it, but destruction struck the crop.

who weeps with the gray doves whenever they call in cooing cadence.
Who weeps with the doves whenever they coo a rhyme.
