ماتَdied المَكارِمُthe noble virtues وَاِبنيand my son
ماتَ المَكارِمُ وَاِبني
وَماتَتand died المَكرُماتُthe noble deeds
وَماتَت المَكرُماتُ
Noble virtues died—and my son with them;
The noble virtues and my son have died,
The virtues are dead and so are their sons
Noble virtues have died, and my son,
all deeds of honor died.
And noble deeds have died.
The generous acts have passed away
And acts of honor have perished.
لَيتَif only الَّذينَthose whom أَراهُمI see them
لَيتَ الَّذينَ أَراهُم
وَفيهِمُand in them المَكرُguile ماتواthey died
وَفيهِمُ المَكرُ ماتوا
Would that those whom I see—
If only those I see—
Would that those whom I see
Would that those whom I behold,
with deceit in their midst—had died instead.
With guile in them—had died.
Deceitful as they are, had passed away
In whom lies treachery, had died.
