May God bless you and enfold you in mercy,

as long as the scorching darkness pierces through.

You were struck—but my Lord’s decree was fulfilled:

He mends with justice, or He breaks.

The hateful, loathsome envier harmed you—

rather, my darling, he harmed himself.

He wronged you in seclusion, though in my eyes

he merely clasped you—and the affair is widely known.

He squandered my rightful claim in you—may he cease to be—

    deluded by his broad physique.

He did not harm you; rather, your Lord afflicted me

by letting your luxuriant garden wither.

You were drenched in blood; then, into pus

your rose and your downcast narcissus turned.

Your grief-stifling father cried out at what

befell you, while his tears never subside.

    An affliction doubled his sorrows:

every healthy person has someone ill.

I kindled a blaze within his heart,

    stirred by tears and poetry.

My daylight is night until I see you,

and my head’s black hairs have whitened over you.

I have strayed from the paths and betrayed a covenant

if my tears do not spend the night overflowing.

    I pledged a free man—myself—to faithfulness,

one able to rise beneath its burdens:

    تَعنو الصِعابُ الّتي يَروضُ

    frail in body, mighty in resolve;

the hardships he tames bow before him.

For you, the musk of my verse spread abroad,

and choking grief did not stand in its way.
