بِرَيَّةin Rayya ريَّاfragrance رَوضَةٍa garden وَرِياضِand meadows

In Rayya is the fragrance of a garden and meadows.
In Rayya lies the fragrance of a garden and lush meadows,
In her are two beacons of learning and the most just of judges.
Wherein dwell two beacons of knowledge and a most just judge.
مَعاليهماtheir lofty merits فوقَabove النُّجُومِthe stars مُنِيفَةٌtowering
ورأيهماand their judgment فِيin المشرفيّةthe Mashrafi swords ماضِeffective
Their lofty merits tower above the stars,
Their noble heights tower above the stars,
And their judgment takes effect through Mashrafi swords.
And their judgment cuts sharper than the Mashrafiyya blades.
سَئمتُI have wearied of حياتِيmy life والمقامَand dwelling بطَنْجَةٍin Tangier
كأنَّas though بِلادَthe lands اللّهِof God غَيرnot عِرَاضِvast
I have wearied of my life and of dwelling in Tangier,
I have grown weary of my life and of staying in Tangier,
As though God's lands were not vast.
As though God's lands were not vast and wide.
سَيُورِقُwill sprout leaves عُودِيmy bough إِنْif سَكنتُI settle بريَّةٍin Rayya
وَيسودُّand will turn black منof فَوْدَيَّmy two temples كلُّall بياضِwhiteness
My bough will sprout leaves if I settle in Rayya,
My withered branch shall sprout leaves if I dwell in Rayya,
And all the whiteness at my temples will turn black,
And every strand of white upon my temples shall turn black.

Beside her two moons—indeed, in their radiant brows
In the presence of its two moons—for truly in their radiant brows
Are guidance for the blind and healing for the sick.
Lie guidance for the blind and a cure for the ailing.

O Rayya, my fertile pasture and my she-camels,
Rayya is my fertile pasture and the haven for my camels,
And you are a daughter in Ibn Iyad's keeping.
And you are a daughter safe within the protection of Ibn Iyad.
