In God's mercy is the one He took in death,
In the mercy of Allah is he whom He took
In the mercy of God rests the one He has taken, and noble virtues have risen to mourn him.
and noble virtues rose to mourn him.
So the noble women mourned him
Abdul-Ghani has died—oh, the sorrow! He who once congratulated Glory for him now offers it condolences.

Abd al-Ghani has died—alas!
Abdul Ghani has died, what a loss!
A garden that healed my eyes with its bloom, yet Time laid it waste just as it adorned it.
Whoever congratulated Glory on him now consoles it.
He who wished him glory, may he be rewarded
Let no spring rain water my abode, nor let its pasture flourish save with tears.

A garden whose freshness healed my gaze—
A garden that healed my eyes with its blossoms
For the sake of my grief over him, I am pleased by a life whose sweetness Death has turned bitter.
Time stripped it bare just when it had adorned it.
Time disabled it when it weakened him
I would have wished—were it not for my Lord's reward—that He had caused me to die before him and kept him alive.

So may spring never water my dwelling, nor
So neither did spring water my meadow
That He might make righteous deeds remain in my lineage, lasting through him whose end is praiseworthy.
may its pasture grow lush except with tears.
Nor did it flourish except with tears watering it
He who wore me down lived on to test me, while he who healed me turned away—oh, woe!

Because of my sorrow for him, it pleases me
In my reckoning, hopes did not keep their promise to me, for man does not attain all that he desires.
a life whose sweetest part death has made bitter.
To live bitterly as the doves have made it bitter
Do you not see Glory, how it bows its head from a calamity that has veiled its face?

Its edge was dulled by the setting of a star of eminence, one whom full moons resemble.
that He had taken me before him and kept him alive,
He would have taken me before him and revived him
He was my morning joy—so how can I wake cheerful? And he was my solace—so how can I forget him?

Remaining with the Praiseworthy as his consequence
You were the very meaning of our time while with us; when you departed, its meaning departed too.

He who wore me thin lives, and I am tried through him;
Whoever healed me lived so I was tested with him
Who will comfort the one of bleeding, tearful eyelids? Since Time barred him from you, it has left him parched.
he who healed me has departed—alas for him!
And whoever healed me turned away so woe to him
He cannot master his grief to heal it, nor does he obey reason that it might restrain him.

In my count, death did not count my count
O Lord of a high peak that sheltered him after you from fear of foes, while he sighs in anguish.
nor does a person have whatever he desires.
And man does not get what he wishes
He wept and watered the earth with his tears, as if the winds had beseeched him for rain.

Do you not see how Glory bowed its head beneath
Do you not see glory how it lowered its gaze
Prestige departed from him the moment you departed, and injustice embraced him wherever he sought refuge.
a calamity that veiled its face?
From a loss that obscured its splendor
He was greeted by the kin of Mālik and Muḍar, and the auspicious moon greeted his likeness in you.

The setting of a star of eminence blunted its edge,
So the like of it declined, the fading of a lofty star
Abdul-Ghani was guided right when he passed on, never selling his faith for his worldly life.
a star whose likenesses are full moons.
With it the cycles of perfection have likes
Dignifying his age with his adherence to the Sunnah, embroidering his virtue with his excellence.

He was my morning draught—how can I wake
It was my dawn, so how did it become a sunset
Recalling his era through his abiding place, making one forget blame through his gracious pardon.
joyful? He was my solace—how can I forget him?
And I forgot, so how did I forget him
Joining his kinship with his mercy, drawing near with his kindness to those who shunned him.

O delight of the eye, its weeping has not done you justice,
O delight of the eye, what loss made you cry
A jester of wit to those who spoke with him, as if his two jaws were the Gardens of Paradise.
when it weeps and its tears are merely water.
When tears wept and tears were its waters
A merit saved him—though it drew envy upon him—and God saved him from all that he feared.

You were the meaning of our time, with us
His piety was an ample shield upon him; I never thought misfortunes could overpower his piety.
until you departed, and its meaning departed too.
Until when you slipped, its meaning slipped
I lived on against my will, though I had thought Death would envelop me on the day it enveloped him.

Who, then, will help one whose eyelids bleed and weep,
So who will continue wetting my eyelids
The hemorrhage was cruel to him when it flowed, spilling the blood of the most precious of its victims.
since Time barred him from you and left him thirsty?
Since fate turned away from you and turned them away
His illness was worsened by a remedy that sickened; he endured it before our eyes, and it brought him distress.

He cannot master grief so as to heal it,
Sorrow cannot withstand him and grow calm
Oh, the wonder! How can people seek its favor when it is the doom of those it treats?
nor does he heed reason that might restrain him.
Nor does it obey prohibition and abstain
Cursed be the Evil Eye! How vile was its work upon his eyes and his smiling mouth.

O Lord, shelter the gentle one after you from
He died, and in his rigid state, I could not close his eyelids nor his mouth.
from fear of his enemies, while he groaned!
Fear of enemies while he sheltered him
It was said his precious eyes gazed fixedly to behold God and His proximity, that he might be granted his station near Him.

He wept and drenched it with his tears,
He cried so he watered him from his tears
Amidst the agony of death, I was awed by his turn towards a tradition I had forgotten.
as though its mountain goats had asked him for rain.
As if the clouds had rained upon him and watered him
He consoled me even as tears overcame me, saying, "Be not afraid; God is with you."

Since you left him, his standing left him too,
Glory left him since you slipped away from him
While in the anguish of his final passing, he was with me, testifying that there is no god but He.
and oppression embraced him where it drove him for refuge.
So oppression took him wherever it exiled him
If only my envier could see his Creator on the day He took his soul and granted him his recompense.

His two clans are of Malik and Mudar,
His life greeted him from Malik and Mudar
They prayed over him, and a speaker among them said, "Our Lord has grieved us, but pleased him."
and the auspicious moon embodied in you greeted him.
And the auspicious moon, from you it greeted him
I offered my blood to water his grave, when it healed me with the goodness of his fragrance.

Abdul Ghani was granted success when he passed
And I said: I would be blessed to be buried here, that the sanctity of his resting place might encompass mine.
and had not sold his faith for his worldly life,
And did not sell his religion for his life
So that when he rises, I might rise following him—yet how can I attain his victory and glad tidings?

You have left me, O dew of the spring, utterly lost, devoured by the mouths of my enemies.

Our Lord is angry with us and pleased with him

To God's pleasure the day I meet Him
