I wonder—did my beloved forget the covenant when
I wonder, did my beloved forget the pledge when
My love, did you forget your promise when
I wonder, has my beloved forgotten the covenant since
he triumphed, and death cured his ailments?
he triumphed and death cured his ailments?
You triumphed and death cured its diseases?
He has triumphed, and death has healed his ailments?

He who reaches the goal does not forget one who faltered—
The one who reaches his goal does not ask after the one who faltered—
The pursuer does not ask about the one who turned away.
He who attains the goal asks not of the one who faltered,
whether he loosed the unruly steed’s rein or tamed it.
whether he let go of the unruly steed’s reins or tamed it.
Did you release the reins of hardship or please it?
Whether he cast aside the reins of the unruly steed or tamed it.
ياO راحِلاًdeparting one نَحوَtoward جَنىthe fruits of جَنَّةٍParadise
سَلask لِأَبيكَfor your father اللَهGod إِنهاضَهُlifting him up
O you departing toward the fruits of Paradise,
O traveler toward the fruits of Paradise,
O you who travel to the gardens of Paradise,
O you who are departing toward the harvest of Paradise,
ask God to raise your father up.
ask God to lift your father up.
Ask Allah for your father to revive him.
Beseech God for your father, that He may grant him strength to rise;
غادَرَهُleft him الدَهرُtime أَسيرَa captive of الأَسىsorrow
وَكانَand was فيكَin you الخَيرُgoodness إِنif هاضَهُbroke him
Fate left him a prisoner of sorrow,
Time has left him a captive of sorrow,
Time left him prisoner of sorrow,
For Fate has left him behind, a prisoner of sorrow,
yet in you was consolation for him, if fate broke him.
and in you lay solace if it broke him.
And through you goodness revived him.
And in you lay the goodness to mend him, had he been broken.
