خُصصتُI was singled out بِذاby this المُصابِcalamity وَعَمّand it struck كُلّeveryone
خُصصتُ بِذا المُصابِ وَعَمّ كُلّ
وَلَيسَand is not عُمومهُits affecting everyone مِثلlike الخُصوصِpersonal affliction
وَلَيسَ عُمومهُ مِثل الخُصوصِ
I was singled out by this calamity, and it struck everyone.
I was singled out by this calamity, though it encompassed all,
Yet its shared grief is not like personal grief.
And the general grief is not like the specific loss;
فَرَبّاتfor the women of الخِيامِthe tents يَنحنَthey wail ثُكلاًin bereavement
فَرَبّات الخِيامِ يَنحنَ ثُكلاً
عَلَيكَfor you مَعيwith me وَرَبّاتُand the women of الخُصوصِthe reed huts
عَلَيكَ مَعي وَرَبّاتُ الخُصوصِ
For the women of the tents wail in bereavement
For the mistresses of the tents wail in bereavement
for you, alongside me, as do the women of the reed huts.
Over you, alongside me, and the mistresses of the private chambers.
