I shall surely ask for rain العَينَthe eye غَيثاًrain لِرَبعِكُمfor your dwelling
وَإِنand even if زادَهُincreases it صَوبُthe downpour الدُموعِof tears مُحولاin barrenness
I shall surely ask my eye to rain upon your dwelling,
I shall surely beseech my eyes to rain down upon your dwelling,
Even if the downpour of tears makes it more barren.
Even if the downpour of tears only deepens its desolation.
لَأَستَنشِقَنَّI shall surely inhale الريحَthe wind شَوقاًin longing إِلَيكُمُfor you
إِذاwhen هِيَit هَبَّتblows بُكرَةًin the morning وَأَصيلاand in the evening
I shall surely breathe in the wind, longing for you,
I shall surely inhale the wind, longing for your scent,
Whenever it blows, morning and evening.
Whenever it blows, at the break of dawn or in the fading afternoon.
لَأَنتُمsurely you وَإِنand though خُنتُمyou broke مَواثيقَthe pledges عَهدِناof our covenant
أَحِبَّةُbeloved ones قَلبيof my heart لاnot أُريدُI desire بَديلاa replacement
Surely you, though you broke the pledges of our covenant,
For you—even though you have betrayed the covenants of our vow—
Are my heart's beloved ones; I desire no replacement.
Remain the beloveds of my heart; I desire no substitute.
لَآخِرُsurely the end عَهديof my pledge مِثلlike أَوَّلهits beginning لَكُمto you
وَإِنand though كُنتُمُyou are لاnot تَحفَظونَyou cherish خَليلاa dear friend
Surely the end of my pledge to you is like its beginning,
My devotion at the end remains just as it was at the beginning,
Even though you do not cherish a dear friend.
Even if you fail to preserve the bond of a faithful friend.
لَأَسعَفتُمُyou would surely have aided المُشتاقَthe yearning lover لَوif ذُقتُمُyou had tasted الهَوىlove
فَأحيَيتُمُand so you would have revived بِالوَصلِthrough union مِنهُby it قَتيلاone slain
You would surely have aided the yearning lover, had you tasted love,
You would have aided this yearning soul had you but tasted passion,
And through union brought back to life one slain by it.
And revived with your union one whom love has slain.
لَأَجرُكُمُsurely your reward بِالوَصلِfor union أَفضَلُthe best مغنَمٍgain
بِعَيشِكُمُby your lives رِفقاًgentleness عَلَيهِtoward him قَليلاa little
Surely your reward for union is the finest gain.
Your reward for granting connection would be the greatest gain;
By your lives, show him a little gentleness.
I swear by your life, have just a little gentleness upon him.
لَأَنsurely that تُحسِنواyou act kindly أَولىmore fitting بِكُمfor you مِنthan إِساءَةٍdoing harm
وَماand how كانَwas أَولىfitting بِالجَميلِfor the fair one جَميلاkindness
Surely acting kindly befits you more than doing harm,
It is more fitting for you to show kindness than cruelty,
And how becoming kindness is to one so fair!
And how worthy is the beautiful one of doing beautiful deeds.
I shall surely ask for provision اللَهَGod نَوماًsleep فَرُبَّماfor perhaps
وَجَدتُI find إِلَيكُمto you فيin المَنامِdreams سَبيلاa path
I shall surely ask God to grant me sleep, for perhaps
I shall surely pray to God to grant me sleep, for perhaps,
I shall find a path to you in dreams.
I might find a path to you within the realm of dreams.
لَأَستَحسِنَنَّI shall surely deem beautiful الذُلَّabasement فيin طاعَةِobedience to الهَوىlove
وَأَيُّand which مُحبٍّlover لاnot يَعيشُlives ذَليلاabased
I shall surely find abasement beautiful in obedience to love;
I shall surely deem humiliation sweet in obedience to passion,
And what lover does not live in abasement?
For what lover is there who does not live humbled?
لَآلئُpearls عَينيof my eye عقدُهاtheir necklace مُتَناثِرٌscattered
وَإِنand though كانَis لاnot يشفيheals البُكاءُweeping عَليلاone who is ailing
The pearls of my eye—their necklace lies scattered,
The pearls of my eyes—their necklace lies scattered,
Though weeping does not heal one who is ailing.
Even though weeping brings no cure to the ailing heart.
