ثَمِلتI grew drunk بِذِكراهاon remembering her وَطبتand I felt glad كَشارِبٍlike a drinker
لَهاmade merry بِالمَثانيto the lute’s second strings تارَةًat times وَالمَثالِثِand the third strings
I grew drunk on remembrance of her and felt glad, like a drinker
I yearn for her, like a drinker craves wine
I became intoxicated by her memory, joyous as a wine-drinker,
Who made merry, now to the lute’s second strings, now to its third.
Sometimes for seconds, other times thirds
Swaying to the melodies of the lute's second and third strings.
ثَلاثٌthree things سَلَبنَrobbed القَلبَthe heart حُسنَthe goodness of عَزائِهِits consolation
وَأَلبَسنَنيand clothed me ثَوبيthe two robes of خَليعٍa libertine وَناكِثِand an oath-breaker
Three things robbed the heart of its fine consolation
Three beauties robbed my heart of solace
Three things have robbed my heart of its composure and solace,
And clothed me in the two robes of a libertine and an oath-breaker:
And clothed me in a shabby, torn robe
And clothed me in the raiment of the dissolute and the oath-breaker:
ثِقالَةُthe heaviness of ردفَيهاher two buttocks وَرِقَّةُand the slenderness of خَصرهاher waist
وَسِحرُand the spell of العُيونِthe eyes القاتِلاتِkilling البَواعِثِreviving
The heaviness of her buttocks and the slenderness of her waist,
The heaviness of her buttocks, the slenderness of her waist
The heaviness of her hips, the slenderness of her waist,
And the spell of eyes that kill and revive.
The magic of her deadly, arousing eyes
And the magic of eyes that slay and resurrect the dead.
ثَقِفتُI encountered بِعَينَيكَin your two eyes الأُسودthe lions كَأَنَّماas though
هُماthe two of them سَيفُthe sword of جبّارٍa tyrant بِقَتلاهُwith his slain عابِثِtoying
I encountered lions in your two eyes, as though
I met your dark eyes as if
I confronted lions with your eyes, as though
They were the sword of a tyrant who toys with his slain.
They were the sword of a tyrant, wantonly killing
They were the sword of a tyrant trifling with his victims.

Trust me despite this distance; I solemnly swear
Trust me in this estrangement, I swear
Trust in me despite this distance, for I solemnly swear—
By your two eyes: I shall not complain, nor break my oath,
By your eyes I won't complain or break faith
By your eyes—that I do not complain, nor shall I break my vow,
ثبوتاًsteadfastness عَلىin العَهدِthe pledge الَّذيthat كانَwas بَينَناbetween us
إِذاwhen غَيَّرَchanges الأَحبابَthe lovers صَرفُthe vicissitudes of الحَوادِثِevents
Steadfast in the pledge that was between us,
Steadfast in the covenant between us
Remaining steadfast to the covenant that existed between us,
When the turns of fortune change lovers.
Even if time's vicissitudes change lovers
Even when the vicissitudes of time alter the hearts of lovers.
ثَنَتنيturned me away صُروفُthe vicissitudes of الدَهرِtime عَنكِfrom you وَماbut not اِنثَنىturned away
فُؤاديmy heart فَجِسميso my body راحِلٌjourneying مِثلlike لابِثِone who stays
Time’s vicissitudes turned me from you, but did not turn
Time's circumstances turned me from you but
The turns of fortune have turned me from you, yet my heart
My heart; so my body journeys like one who stays.
My heart never wavered, though my body wandered
Has not turned; my body travels, but my spirit lingers behind.
ثِمارُthe fruits of المُنىwishes مَنwhoever يَجنِهاreaps them دونَwithout إِلفِهِhis beloved

The fruits of wishes—whoever reaps them without his beloved
The fruits of passion - who tastes them without love
Whoever gathers the fruits of desire without their beloved
Finds life’s good things like foul things.
Finds life's sweetness like bitter herbs
Will find the sweet delights of life to be bitter and foul.
ثَلمتُI chipped صَفاthe rock of صَبريmy patience فأورَثَنيso it bequeathed me الضَنىwasting sickness
فَوَيحso alas for غَريبٍa stranger لِلضَّنىto wasting sickness مِنكfrom you وارِثِan heir
I chipped the rock of my patience, and it bequeathed me wasting sickness.
I broke patience's glass and sorrow inherited me
I have shattered the rock of my patience, inheriting wasting sickness;
Alas, then, for a stranger, heir to wasting sickness from you!
Woe to the stranger whom sorrow inherits from you
Woe to the stranger who inherits such torment from you!
ثَوىhe dwelt عَلىupon جَمرِthe embers of الغَضاthe ghadā tree منbecause of فراقكُمseparation from you

He has lain on ghadā-wood embers because of separation from you.
He who parted from you lies on sorrow's embers
He dwells upon the burning embers of Ghada wood in your absence;
Is there any dream-vision, then, to inquire about my consuming love?
Is there a dreamer searching for my passion?
Is there no phantom vision of you to inquire after my passion?
