    Dwell secure in everlasting Paradise,

    and intercede tomorrow, when your father kneels.

    Then he hopes that you will cry out:

    “Lord, have mercy on my father—for him is all my care.”

    Then the Prophet will say in truth:

    “Rescue him, O best refuge of all.”

    Three are those through whom I have been stricken,

    and my sure tryst is at the Resurrection.

    تُجب لِثَنتَين أَو ثَلاثِ

    Repeat a prayer for him a second time, and a third;

    you will be answered on the second or the third.

    قَد يَغفِر اللَه ذَنب عاثِ

    Trust that we shall meet by Ṭūbā in Paradise;

    God may forgive the sin of one who has wrought havoc.

    Bereavement for you has begged largesse of my eyes

    and filled books with elegies.

    قَبرُكَ فَالسِرُّ في اِنبِثاثِ

    Your grave-dust is musk, though your tomb enclose it;

    for fragrance’s secret lies in spreading abroad.

    فَما لِمَثوايَ في الخباثِ

    You have taken your abode among the pure, apart from me;

    why, then, should my abode be among the foul?

    My garment is worn, yet I do not care

    whether I am clad in new clothes or in tatters.

    I kept my heart steadfast amid calamities

    until fate swept away the one to whom I clung.

    You tempered me, O Time, through warfare

    like the war of Ṣiffīn or of Buʿāth.

    May God thwart you! You spare

    neither noble hawks nor lowly birds.

    My bough bore fruit—but just when it blossomed

    and adorned me like the loveliness of pendant earrings.
