سَلَبَstole الرَدىdeath وَزَرَrefuge القَتيلthe slain man سُلالَتيmy offspring
سَلَبَ الرَدى وَزَرَ القَتيل سُلالَتي
لمّاwhen زَكاflourished وَزَرىmy refuge عَلىabove أَنجابِهِhis noble sons
لمّا زَكا وَزَرى عَلى أَنجابِهِ
Death stole my offspring, the slain man's refuge,
Death snatched away my offspring, the refuge of the slain,
When my refuge rose above his noble sons.
Just as my shelter had flourished beyond his noble roots;
وَبَقيتُand I remained توبِقُنيruin me البَوائِقُcalamities بَعدَهُafter him
وَبَقيتُ توبِقُني البَوائِقُ بَعدَهُ
وَالدَهرُand Time لَوif أَبقاهُhad spared him ليfor me أَنجىwould have saved بِهِthrough him
وَالدَهرُ لَو أَبقاهُ لي أَنجى بِهِ
And I remained, calamities ruining me after him;
And I remained, ravaged by calamities in his wake,
And had Time spared him for me, it would have saved me through him.
When Fate—had it spared him for me—would have been my salvation.
