أَلاbehold إِنَّindeed حُبّيmy love لَهُfor him
تَجاوَزَexceeded مِقدارهُits measure
Behold, my love for him
My love for him has exceeded all bounds
Truly, my love for him
has exceeded its bounds.
When all hearts are healed of their sorrows
Has exceeded all measure.
إِذاif كُلُّevery قَلبٍheart سَلاforgot its love
فَياthen O قَلبُheart مِقlove دارَهُhis dwelling
If every heart forgets its love,
Then O my heart! heal yours
When every other heart finds solace,
then, O heart, love his dwelling.
It is as though my heart has made its home with him
Then, O heart, love his abode.
كَأَنَّas though فُؤاديmy heart ثَوىsettled
بِمَثواهُin his abode أَوor طارهُcarried it away
It is as though my heart had settled
Or has flown away to be with him
As if my heart has settled
in his abode—or he had carried it away.
How can it say it is healed
In his dwelling, or flown to him.
وَكَيفَand how يَقولُsays اِشتَفيfound relief
وَلَمand has not يَقضِfulfilled أَوطارَهُits desires
And how can it say it has found relief
When it hasn’t finished its journey
And how can one say, "I am healed,"
when it has not fulfilled its desires?
When he has not fulfilled his desires?
