    A greeting to the beloveds, unfurled by the east wind,

    as breath releases the fragrance of pure musk.

    May they be watered by rain, until life among them puts forth leaves

    and struts in ornaments and robes of silk.

    وَلَو بِتُّ فيهِم لَاِنجَلى كُلُّ حندسِ

    Night and dawn are alike to me after their departure;

    but if I passed the night among them, every darkness would clear.

    وَتِلكَ العُيونُ البابِلِيّاتُ نَرجسي

    Their radiance is my lamp, and their cheeks my anemones;

    those bewitching Babylonian eyes are my narcissi.

    I asked the lightning’s flash to carry my message

    to a coquettish one who gives me hope, then makes me despair.

    It journeyed late at night, driving my tears toward the beloved precinct,

    and portraying to my eye a smile of bright teeth and dusky lips.

    I raised my gaze toward the pure gold of his cheek,

    hoping to grow rich; it said, “Return rich—like a pauper,”

    happy and wretched, between fire and paradise,

    stripped bare of patience and clothed in sickness.

    He enthralled me with a black line traced in musk

    upon a smooth expanse cast from pure gold.

    The heart of my heart is a dwelling for the beloveds,

    and remembrance of them is my companion in the night’s darkness.
