A grave enfolds you—may my tears give it drink.

Would that it had enfolded us together.

I lived on; yet had I died the day he departed,

patience would have dealt more kindly with me.

    فَلَستُ قَبلَ المَدى صَريعا

    My life must reach its appointed end;

before that end, I cannot lie slain.

In this calamity, I marveled at anyone

struck in his very soul and left terrified.

The gravest blows of fate seem light—

    except love's sundering and abasement.

I have suffered from fate enough,

yet I do not see its assaults content.

ʿAbd al-Ghanī, my son, whom I would ransom

with my own life, if only I could—

today you taught me how to weep,

when once I would not shed my tears.

I forgive those whom I blamed for weeping, since

you made me weep both tears and blood.

The people consoled me, then they said:

“The lion of al-Sharā—why is he so grief-stricken?”

My dwelling places lie desolate, though you were my joy

within them—how forlorn those dwellings are!

Fate stripped them bare just when it had adorned them,

and now they mourn their spring.

May the Compassionate, the Merciful, pardon me

if you will intercede for me.

Peace from me be upon you—how long this

    absence! Do you remember returning?

Return, and ask God to take my soul,

that He may hasten our reunion.
