أوُلوعٌis it passion? وغُربَةٌand exile وَسقَامٌand sickness
إِنَّindeed مِثلِيone like me لَفِيsurely in عَذابٍtorment شَدِيدِsevere
Passion, exile, and sickness?
Longing, estrangement, and illness -
Indeed, one like me is in grievous torment.
Indeed, the likes of me are in severe torment.
هَكَذَاthus الحُبُّlove لاnot كَدَعوَىlike the claim of أُنَاسٍpeople
حَدَّثواthey spoke بِالهَوَىof passion عَلَىthrough التَّقلِيدِimitation
Such is love—not like the claims of people
Such is love, not the pretense of people
who spoke of passion through mere imitation.
Who talked of passion by mere tradition.
يَاO قَرِيبَquick to النِّفارِshunning غَيرَnot قَرِيبٍnear
وَبَعِيدَand far from الوِصَالِunion غَيرَnot بَعِيدِfar away
O you, quick to shun, yet not near,
O you who are near yet remote,
and far from union, yet not far away.
Far, yet not far,
مَاnot رَأينَاwe had seen مِنfrom قَبلِbefore جِسمِكَyour body جِسماًa body
مِنof لُجَينٍsilver وَقَلبُهُand its heart مِنof حَدِيدِiron
Before your body, we had never seen a body
Never before your body did we see a body
of silver, with a heart of iron.
Of granite, with a heart of iron.
أتَّقِيI fear أَنthat يَذُوبَit melts منfrom جَانِبَيهِits two sides
حِينَwhen يَمشيhe walks تَثَاقُلاًlanguidly بِالبُرُودِin the striped cloaks
I fear it may melt along both its sides
I fear it would melt on both sides
when he walks languidly in striped cloaks.
When he walks heavily because of the cold weather.
أتُرَىdo you suppose? إِنif قَضَيتُI died فِيكَfor you اشتِياقاًof longing
أتُصَلِّيwill you pray? عَلَىover غَرِيبٍa stranger شَهِيدِa martyr
I wonder: if I die of longing for you,
Will I, if filled with longing for you,
will you pray over a stranger, a martyr?
Pray over a poor stranger deceased?
