O people of Tudmir, indeed your neighbor

Was caught, despite the caution you see in him.

His love delivered him to a gazelle fawn

Whose desire is to torment a lover's heart.

He sways in the twin robes of his beauty,

Just as a bough sways in its splendor.

And my longing for his greeting was

The longing of hillside gardens for his rain.

    Yet he withheld even that—alas!

Love's clarity has reverted to murk.

Ah, how dear he is, though he shuns me and assails me!

I am content with him in his coming and going.

It is enough for me just to see him, and

To walk in his footsteps whenever he walks.
