Why have you severed your cord from a devoted lover?
Why have you refused me access though I gave myself for you?
May I be your ransom! Yet you have lorded it over one brought low.
While you disdained the abject, and acted so very high.

And why have you disdained to console a lovesick lover,
Why did you object to a sick man's raving, whose love was true, whose frame was frail?
Sound in love, with an ailing body?
Why did you not come back to me, when you were not accustomed to
فَهَلّاthen why not عُدتَنيyou visited me إِذsince لَمnot تُعَوَّدyou came to visit

Why, then, did you not visit me—since you did not come
receiving messages through letter, book, or messenger?
In person—by letter or messenger?
I am wearied by your fickleness and stratagems.

Your fickleness has indeed baffled my ingenuity;
Can tricks and cleverness help at the Resurrection?
And can ingenuity avail with one so quick to tire?
