What is it with the wine your eyes pass round,

that your sides sway in youth's intoxication?

Why not mix its purest wine for your lovers

with the cool moisture of your teeth, or the sweetness of your dusky lips?

Rather, what harm would it do you, when I have given you undivided love,

if I won the favor enjoyed by your tooth-cleaning twig?

It is injustice enough that thirst has afflicted me

sorely, while an arak twig has found a cure.

Ah, for your tenderness! Time seemed as though

its freshness had been colored by your youth's mantle.

And the night, however long, was shortened by

‘Give me,’ while the watcher was heedless, and ‘Take this.’

And how often the breeze fell sick, so I thought it

my lament grown tender, calling forth your lament.

If, carefree, you grow fond of a heavy sleeper's drowsiness,

you have so often driven your sleep away for my sake.

Or if you bind your knees with estrangement in hatred's assembly,

how often I have loosened your bindings for reunion.

    يا لَيتَني أَصبَحتُ بَعضَ مُناكِ

    As for my soul's desires, you are all of them;

if only I could become one of your desires!

Union with you is brought near when its meeting-place lies far away,

by a vision through which I almost kiss your mouth.

And though you forsook right guidance in an act of betrayal,

nothing plunged me into error but my love for you.

    Al-Jahwari, Abu al-Walid, has virtues

like a garden made to laugh by the weeping clouds.

    تَدبيرُهُ لِلمُلكِ خَيرُ مِلاكِ

    In him is a refined king who governs time;

his governance is kingship's surest support.

He raced his father, who had already outrun the farthest goal,

and followed him, between being outdistanced and catching up.

The sun of day, his full moon, and his stars

are his sons, stars like Farqad and Simak.

Night travelers seek light from bright stars

among them, lighting the depths of utter darkness.

Glad tidings for you, O world, and for us together!

This vizier, Abu al-Walid, is your young champion.

Lordship is found there, should you lose it,

and whenever you lose nobility, it is there.

And if you hear of one for whom were gathered

the virtues scattered among mankind, that is he.

A keen sword in sudden wrath, a mountain of serenity,

a steed for every goal, a stump to rub against.

Cheerful, reproached for his generosity; and a fool is

whoever tries to gauge fire with a poker.

A master of thought: when across a writing sheet he moves

his right hand, leisurely or in haste,

he strings eloquence among his written lines

as pearl-beads are strung on threads.

Time, as a rival, called to his endeavors:

‘You have won every virtue: enough for you!’

The rose in its gathering-place, with dew for its nightly companion,

wears no adornment but some of your ornaments.

No, nor is musk, whose fragrance tells tales,

perfumed save with the imprint of your praise.

Delight is in your remembrance, not the song of a trilling singer

who varies his art between letting notes flow and holding them back.

A thrill bore your friends flying toward you,

at which your enemies' hearts flutter with grief.

    O moon, before whose glory

and radiance the seven in their spheres bow!

Leadership's joy when you took hold of its reins

is a bride's joy in a valid marriage bond.

Whoever says you are not peerless in intellect

and good deeds has embraced polytheism.

Adorn my neck with your gracious regard, for it

suffices me for both the day of finery and the day of battle.

And if calamities speak by gazing

askance at me, tell them, ‘Beware!’

He is in the care of resolve whose face scowls

at calamity, and of a generous, laughing nature.

And many a dark Dari musk has doubled its worth

when humbled by a grinder and a crushing-stone.

And clouded gloom is a veil for the radiant sun,

and the scabbard is the abode of the deadly blade.

May your health gladden you; if it were

a person I could converse with, I would say, ‘Joy to you!’

May your life endure as long as your continuance is wished, and may there ever be

new life through you for noble ranks after their ruin.
