What harm would it do if you showed me mercy,

    when you know my affliction?

May it gladden you, O my wish and my desire,

that you are free of what I suffer.

You laugh in love, while I weep.

God is the judge between us.

I say, when slumber has flown from me,

the words of one tormented, whose heart is lost in love:

O sleeper whose love has woken me,

    grant me sleep, O sleeper.
