They came to you in the bashful lover’s hue,
She came to you with the bashful lover's hue
mingling with the hue of the fearful lover:
Mixing with the sleepless lover's complexion too

fruits whose ripening was ensured
Fruits that included realizing them
by the temperate air that surrounded them.
An air surrounded them temperate and true

فَمِنso from حَرِّthe heat of شَمسٍsun إِلىto بَردِthe coolness of ظِلّshade
It took care to nurture them by degrees:
She came to gently unfold her stages
from the sun’s heat to the coolness of shade,
From sun's heat to the coolness of shade
إِلىuntil أَنthat تَناهَتthey reached perfection شِفاءَa cure for العَليلِthe ailing

وَأُنسَand solace for المَشوقِthe yearning lover وَلَهوَand delight for الغَزِلthe amorous lover
until they reached perfection—a cure for the ailing,
Until she ended the healing of the ailing one
and solace for the yearning lover, and delight for the amorous.
And brought joy to the longing one and the flirtation of the amorous one
فَلَوso if تَجمُدُwere to congeal الراحُwine لَمnot تَعدُهاsurpass them
وَإِنand if هِيَthey ذابَتmelted فَخَمرٌthen wine تَحِلّis lawful
So, were wine to congeal, it would not surpass them;
If the wine would freeze she wouldn't make it stay
and if they melted, they would be lawful wine.
And if it melted it's a wine that comes into bloom
لَهاthey have مَنظَرٌan appearance حَسَنٌbeautiful فيin العُيونِthe eyes

Their appearance is lovely to the eye,
She has a beautiful sight in the eyes
like your worldly life, yet it is fleeting.
Like your world but it is fleeting
وَطَعمٌand a flavor يَلَذُّis delightful لِمَنto whoever ذاقَهُtasted it

كَلِذَّةِlike the pleasure of ذِكراكَremembering you لَوif لَمnot يُمَلّwere found tiresome
And a flavor delightful to whoever tastes it,
And a taste that delights whoever tastes it
like the pleasure of remembering you—if it did not pall.
Like the sweetness of remembering you if it doesn't become insipid

And a fragrance: when it wafts, I imagine it
And a scent when it's aroma blows
dictating your praise, or beginning to proclaim it.
It makes your praise boring or it fades

To the palms, their touch portrays
Her touch represents to the palms
the softness of your days—or imitates it.
The softness of your times or it conforms

وَمَنand whoever يَصفُis pure مِنهُfrom him الهَوىlove فَليُدِلّthen let him take liberties
My affection was pure, so I took the liberty of offering them;
An elite so I have indulged describing it
and whoever’s love is pure, let him take such liberties.
And whoever describes it let him point

Your acceptance of them is a fresh favor,
Accepting it is an untainted grace
and a kindness linked with what came before it.
And a favor connected to what preceded it
وَلَوكُنتُand if I had أَهدَيتُI offered as a gift نَفسيmy own soul اِختَصَرfell short

تُI (past-tense suffix) عَلىdespite أَنَّهاthat it is غايَةُthe utmost of المُحتَفِلone sparing no effort
And had I offered my own soul, I would have fallen short,
If I were to give myself I'd summarize
though it is the utmost a devoted giver can offer.
That she is the aim of the most joyous celebrant
