يَجرَحُwounds الدَهرُtime وَياسوand heals
There is nothing wrong with my expectation:
My thoughts are not downcast,
Time wounds and heals.
Time wounds and heals.
رُبَّماsometimes أَشرَفَbrought near بِالمَرwith a person (partial word)
ءِ(completes 'person') عَلىto الآمالِhopes ياسُdespair
Sometimes a person is brought near
Sometimes hope hovers
To his hopes by despair.
Above expectations, O Iyas!
وَلَقَدand indeed يُنجيكَsaves you إِغفاheedlessness (partial word)
لٌ(completes 'heedlessness') وَيُرديكَand ruins you احتِراسُcaution
And heedlessness may indeed save you,
Pardoning may save you
While caution brings you ruin.
And caution destroy you.
وَالمَحاذيرُand dangers سِهامٌarrows
وَالمَقاديرُand fate's decrees قِياسُbows
And dangers are arrows,
Precautions are arrows
And fate's decrees are bows.
And fates are measurements.
وَلَكَمand how often أَجدىproved useful قُعودٌsitting still
وَلَكمand how often أَكدىproved fruitless التِماسُseeking
And how often sitting still has helped,
How much solitude helps!
And how often seeking has proved fruitless.
How much seeking hurts!

عَزَّbecame exalted ناسٌsome people ذَلَّbecame humbled ناسُsome people
And such is time: whenever
Thus time, when some
Some are exalted, others are humbled.
Rise, others fall.

And the sons of the days are varied:
Sons of days are brothers,
Nobles and lowly folk.
Companions, then strangers.

We wear the world, but
We wear this world
That garment is a passing pleasure.
Yet that dress is pleasure.

O Abu Hafs, you have not been matched
O Abu Hafs none like you
In understanding by Iyas.
In wisdom, O Iyas!

From the radiance of your judgment, in
From your insight I take
The darkness of calamity, I borrow light.
Light in the darkness.

لَمnot (past negation) يُخالِفهُcontradict it قِياسُanalogy
And my affection for you is an explicit text;
My love for you is plain,
No analogy has contradicted it.
Beyond measure.

I am bewildered, and this matter has
Perplexed am I, yet matters
Clarity and ambiguity.
Are clear and obscure.

What do you think of people who have turned
What think you of a people who
From their pledge and broken faith?
Broke pacts and were vile,
وَرَأَونيand they saw me سامِرِيّاًa Samiri (Samaritan)
يُتَّقىis guarded against مِنهُfrom him المَساسُtouching
And saw me as a Samiri,
Saw me as a Samaritan,
Whom one avoids touching.
Dangerous to touch?

فَاِنتِهاشٌthen tearing وَاِنتِهاسُand gnawing
Wolves, maddened by my flesh:
Wolves craving my flesh,
Then tearing and gnawing.
Gnashing, tearing!
كُلُّهُمall of them يَسأَلُasks عَنabout حاليmy condition
وَلِلذِئبِand the wolf has اِعتِساسُnight-prowling
All of them ask about my condition,
All ask of my state
And the wolf prowls by night.
Yet for wolves, snarling!
إِنif قَساgrew harsh الدَهرُtime فَلِلماءِthen water has

If time grows harsh, water still
If time is harsh, water
Gushes forth from rock.
Splits rock in the end.

فَلِلغَيثِthen rain has اِحتِباسُbeing held back
And even if I have become imprisoned,
Though darkened, rain comes,
Rain, too, is held back.
Floods, nothing lasts.

وَلَهُand it has بَعدُafterward اِفتِراسُseizing prey
The fierce, tawny lion crouches,
The bright rose wilts
Yet afterward it still seizes prey.
Yet blooms again.

مُقلَةَthe eye of المَجدِglory النُعاسُdrowsiness
So ponder how there steals over
See how sleep weighs down
Glory's eye a drowsiness.
Glory, how musk

فَيوطاthen is trodden on وَيُداسُand trampled
And musk is crumbled in the dust,
Crumbles to dust, is crushed,
Then trodden on and trampled.
Trampled underfoot.
لاnot يَكُنlet be عَهدُكَyour pledge وَرداًa rose
إِنَّindeed عَهديmy pledge لَكَto you آسُmyrtle
Let your pledge not be a rose;
Let not your love be temporary,
Indeed, my pledge to you is myrtle.
Mine for you lasts.

And pass my remembrance round like a cup,
Recall me like a cup
Whenever a cup rides upon your palm.
Your hand never put down.

And seize the serenity of the nights;
Seize sweet nights
Life is only what we snatch.
For life is but theft.

فَقَدfor indeed طالَhas lasted long الشِماسُunruliness
And perhaps time will be generous,
May time show mercy,
For its unruliness has lasted long.
For dusk is long.
