لَم يَكُن هَجرُ حَبيبي عَن قِلى

لا وَلا ذاكَ التَجَنّي مَلَلا

لا وَلا ذاكَ التَجَنّي مَلَلا

My beloved's estrangement was not out of aversion.

My beloved's abandonment was not at all

No, nor was that mistreatment out of boredom.

A cause of weariness or boredom for my heart

سَرَّهُ شُكرِيَ إِذ عافى وَلَم

سَرَّهُ شُكرِيَ إِذ عافى وَلَم

يَدرِ ما غايَةُ صَبري فَابتَلى

يَدرِ ما غايَةُ صَبري فَابتَلى

My gratitude pleased him when he granted me relief, and he did not

He was pleased with my gratitude when he excused me

know the limit of my patience, so he put me to the test.

Not knowing the extent of my patience, so he tested me

أَنا راضٍ بِالَّذي يَرضى بِهِ

أَنا راضٍ بِالَّذي يَرضى بِهِ

لِيَ مَن لَو قالَ مُت ما قُلتُ لا

لِيَ مَن لَو قالَ مُت ما قُلتُ لا

I am content with what he sees fit

I am content with what pleases him

for me—he who, if he said 'Die,' would hear no 'No' from me.

For me, one who, if he said "Die," I would not say "No"

مَثَلٌ في كُلِّ حُسنٍ مِثلَ ما

مَثَلٌ في كُلِّ حُسنٍ مِثلَ ما

صارَ ذُلّي في هَواهُ مَثَلا

صارَ ذُلّي في هَواهُ مَثَلا

He is a paragon of every beauty, just as

An example in every beauty is like what

my abasement in loving him has become a byword.

My humiliation in his love has become an example

يا فَتيتَ المِسكِ يا شَمسَ الضُحى

يا فَتيتَ المِسكِ يا شَمسَ الضُحى

يا قَضيبَ البانِ يا ريمَ الفَلا

يا قَضيبَ البانِ يا ريمَ الفَلا

O powdered musk, O sun of the forenoon,

O musk boy, O sun of the morning

O bough of the ban tree, O gazelle of the wilderness!

O wand of incense, O sand of the dune

إِن يَكُن لي أَمَلٌ غَيرَ الرِضا

إِن يَكُن لي أَمَلٌ غَيرَ الرِضا

مِنكَ لا بُلِّغتُ ذاكَ الأَمَلا

مِنكَ لا بُلِّغتُ ذاكَ الأَمَلا

If I have any hope other than favor

If I had any hope other than acceptance

from you, may I never be granted that hope.

Of you, I would not have attained that hope
