أَجِدُّI am earnest وَمَنwhile the one أَهواهُI love him فيin الحُبِّlove عابِثٌis frivolous
وَأوفيand I keep faith لَهُwith him بِالعَهدِin the pledge إِذwhile هُوَhe ناكِثُis an oath-breaker
I am earnest, while the one I love is frivolous in love.
And I keep my pledge to him, while he breaks his.
حَبيبٌa beloved نَأىdrew away عَنّيfrom me مَعَdespite القُربِnearness وَالأَسىand sorrow
مُقيمٌabides لَهُfor him فيin مُضمَرِthe hidden depths القَلبِof the heart ماكِثُlingering
A beloved has drawn away from me despite his nearness, while sorrow
for him abides, lingering in the heart’s hidden depths.
جَفانيhe spurned me بِإِلطافِby favoring العِداthe foes وَأَزالَهُand turned him away
عَنِfrom الوَصلِunion رَأيٌa resolve فيconcerning القَطيعَةِseverance حادِثُnewly arisen
He spurned me, favoring foes; he was turned away
from union by a newfound resolve to sever ties.
تَغَيَّرتَyou have changed عَنfrom عَهديwhat I knew of you وَماand not زِلتُI have ceased واثِقاًtrusting
بِعَهدِكَin your pledge لَكِنbut غَيَّرَتكَchanged you الحَوادِثُevents
You have changed from the one I knew, yet I have remained trusting
in your pledge; but events have changed you.
وَماand not كُنتُI was إِذwhen مَلَّكتُكَI made you master القَلبَthe heart عالِماًaware
بِأَنِّيَthat I عَنfor حَتفيmy death بِكَفِّيَwith my own hand باحِثُseeking
And when I gave you mastery of my heart, I did not know
that with my own hand I was seeking my death.
فَدَيتُكَmay I be your ransom إِنَّindeed الشَوقَlonging ليto me مُذsince هَجَرتَنيyou forsook me
مُميتٌdeadly فَهَلso is there ليfor me مِنfrom وِصالِكَunion with you باعِثُone who revives
May I be your ransom! Since you forsook me, my longing
is killing me; can union with you bring me back to life?
سَتَبلىwill wear out اللَياليthe nights وَالوِدادُwhile love بِحالِهِas it is
جَديدٌfresh وَتَفنىand they will perish وَهوَwhile it لِلأَرضِto the earth وارِثُis heir
The nights will wear away, while love, unchanged,
stays fresh; they will perish, and it will inherit the earth.
وَلَوand if أَنَّنيthat I أَقسَمتُswore أَنَّكَthat you قاتِليmy killer
وَأَنِّيَand that I مَقتولٌam slain لَماwould not قيلَbe called حانِثُa false swearer
And were I to swear that you are my killer,
and that I am slain, I would not be called a false swearer.
