كَمhow much لِريحِfor the wind الغَربِthe west مِنof عُرفٍfragrance نَدِيِّdewy
كَالشَرابِlike drink العَذبِsweet فيin نَفسِthe soul of الصَدِيّthe thirsty one
How much dewy fragrance the west wind bears,
How gentle is the fragrance of the western breeze
Like sweet drink in the soul of the thirsty!
Like sweet drink to the soul of the parched
حَيثُwhere عَبّادٌʿAbbād فَتىthe youth of المَجدِglory الَّذيwhom

Where ʿAbbād is, the youth of glory through whom
Where the people are youthful glories who
The world has risen, as a bride is raised on display.
The world has guided, as the guide leads the lost
مَلِكٌa king راحَتُهُhis palm بَحرُa sea of النَدىgenerosity

A king whose palm is a sea of generosity,
A king whose comfort is the sea of dew
Just as his brow is the full moon of the assembly.
And whose anger flares like the full moon’s glow
أَصبَحَتhas become دَولَتُهُhis reign فيin عَصرِناour age
كَفِرِندٍlike a blade’s lustre عادَreturned فيin سَيفٍa sword صَدِيّrusty
His reign has become, in our age,
His state in our time is like a polished sword
Like a blade’s lustre restored to a rusty sword.
Returned to its sheath, made sharp and ready
