    فَصِلي بِفَرعِكِ لَيلَكِ الغِربيبا

    Here is dawn, keeping watch over your night journey;

So join your raven-black night with your tresses.

You have necklaces like the stars,

At home in your sky—your throat and breast.

Let your earring take al-Jawza's place whenever

She dips, hastening her wing westward.

And when the folds of your jeweled sash stretch across you,

A Pleiades rises that will never set.

And how often, when you greeted us, you displayed

A dyed palm—the very celestial 'Dyed Hand.'

O suspected one, whose habit is to claim innocence,

You are the enemy—why, then, are you called beloved?

Why is your cheek still stained

With blood, and your glance still suspicious?

Had you wished, you would not have tormented a lover's heart,

One who finds torment sweet in loving you.

And you would have visited him—rather, visited him in sickness; for love

Is an illness whose physician is union.

Estrangement is only separation, except that

The raven has not opened its beak to caw of it.

And indeed, fortitude has met its death because of you,

So it lay at rest, leaving a sigh and sobbing behind.

And I see the eye's tears, whose flood knows no

Ebb, when the heart is a well.

What have I to do with the days? Relentless even in youth

Was their hostility, clothing my cheek-hair in gray.

They effaced the crescent of my years before it waxed full,

And through them youth's bough withered while still fresh.

What has surely befallen me, had it struck a towering mountain,

Would have crumbled its flank and made it a sand dune.

So if misfortunes afflict me, I do see

Scars left by the scabbard on the sharp, keen-edged sword.

And if I marvel at being wronged, while Jahwar

Is such an excellent protector, I have indeed seen something strange.

One whose protected neighbor calamities cannot reach

By marching in force, nor by creeping under cover.

A king who obeyed God, granted success by Him,

Who has never ceased turning to Him, repentant.

He seeks His pleasure in opposing and befriending,

And for it he punishes and rewards.

Seasoned in grappling with Time—its vicissitudes sit down

If he rises as orator in the assembly of calamities.

He is not branded with unripe judgment, nor

Does he make a habit of uttering speech offhand.

His qualities reject all counterparts, too precious

For minds to measure any peer against him.

His cheerful lips are ever smiling; when he ties his knee-wraps,

You behold him there, radiant and awe-inspiring.

He fills the eyes when silent, and often

Fills the ears while questioning and replying.

A necklace assembled on the thread of leadership,

Stringing pearls: the sire of noble sons and the noble son.

Their mature man faces trials, relying solely

On an innate gift that is experience enough for him.

And when you summon their young son for a great undertaking,

He answers you, with flowing generosity and cultured grace.

Aspirations the stars vie with; and there has followed

In their nobility, one successor upon another.

And virtues whose delicate telling glistens with dew,

So that you almost mistake praise for a love lyric.

Like myrtle, green with freshness, and the rose, red

With beauty, and musk, potent in fragrance.

And when praise of him varies its arts upon the tongue,

And grows inventive, the meaning is not far-fetched.

Whoever extols his qualities to the utmost commits no

Excess, nor expects to be called a liar.

The slanderers, whose lies had afflicted me, were

Jacob's sons, and I was the wolf.

And when, through your acceptance of fresh fruit, hopes

Have their topmost boughs shaken, let there be no reproach.

I am your rusty sword, to which, whenever you wish,

You can restore polish and sharpness.

How often a path has narrowed for me in a quest,

And you have made it broad in scope and spacious.

And gratitude's domain flourished when you rained upon it

With clouds of bounty, and it was made fertile again.
