From the perfumes of youth did the zephyr exhale,
And remembrance of youth returned to him, so he yearned;
And memory of youth did his spirit regale,

And the lightning's gleam, when it flashed, kept
Ever flashed the lightning its glamour and light,
Summoning the eye's tears until they poured forth.
Provoking his tear till it streamed from his sight.

And can the yearning, lovestruck man control his tears?
Can the sad captive control his poor tears?
My two friends, if I give way to grief, the excuse is plain;
O my friend, if I'm frantic - my madness is clear.

If I master my grief, I but show my soul's strength;
And if what fate has struck me with is a calamity,
And if mourning assail me, I take it by length.

Today is for wine, and tomorrow - who knows?
And no wonder: the noble man is stricken by loss.
Let the noble man smile though life buffet his nose.

The nights have deflected harsh blows from my head,
So calamity's shafts did not miss me;
No hurt has the storm of mishap on me spread.

Cordova beautiful - is there hope you'll be mine?

Where kindness was meet, and hostility marred.

Each predecessor only cedes to his successor.
We began and returned there; the return was better;
I watch the days - feeble may trade with finer arts.

And who aims, like me, for base things will get meaner.

Our brothers, all who arrive must depart;
Were free, excellent - never marred, never strown.
And every first will be followed by a last;
You wandered delighted through life's saloons

For fortune may recover, though fortune has stumbled,
And fate was your garden, each hour a new bloom.

I have grieved; I find no joy, though wine intoxicates;
How subtle the breath, how unblemished the whole!
Nor do I respond to the strings as their notes flow gently;
A paradise, Eden - whatever you call
وَلاand not أَرعَويI desist عَنfrom زَفرَةٍa sigh حينَwhen أُعذَلُI am reproached
وَلاand not لِيَfor me مُذsince فارَقتُكُمI parted from you مُتَعَلَّلُa solace
Nor do I hold back a sigh when I am reproached;
The vision that beautifies, lengthens the days of my scroll
Nor have I, since parting from you, any solace,
Till time itself to your perfume is grateful and dulcet and droll.

Except news from you arriving despite the distance.
I mourn covenants, though they now seem so old,
May you praise the days for the gentleness of their ways,
Milder than blossoms, tranquil and controlled.

And may the world gladden you with its lovely coquetry,
Donned we the sprigged apricot, purple and gold.
Safe from its reproach and weariness;
Marched we to joy though the trumpets of war rolled,

And may there always be among you one clothed in its shade,
While security wrapped us and hatred was doled.
Savoring the first fruits of wishes, and receiving congratulations.
