باعَدتِyou kept at a distance بِالإِعراضِby turning away غَيرَnot مُباعِدِone who keeps away
وَزَهَدتِand you grew indifferent فيمَنtoward one who لَيسَis not فيكِtoward you بِزاهِدِindifferent
By turning away, you kept at a distance one who did not keep away.
You've distanced with disdain, not one to distance
And you grew indifferent to one who is not indifferent to you.
And spurned those in whom no asceticism exists
وَسَقَيتِنيand you gave me to drink مِنfrom ماءِwater هَجرِكِyour estrangement ماthat which لَهُbecause of it
أَصبَحتُI have become أَشرَقُI choke بِالزُلالِon clear water البارِدِcold
And you gave me such a draught of your estrangement's water
You've quenched me with the water of your estrangement, leaving me
that I now choke on clear, cold water.
At dawn, radiant with cool, pure water
هَلّاwhy not جَعَلتِyou set فَدَتكِmay it ransom you نَفسيmy soul غايَةًa limit
لِلعَتبِto reproach أَبلُغُهاI can reach it بِجَهدِwith effort الجاهِدِthe striver
Why not set—may my soul ransom you—a limit
Why not make my soul the purpose of your ransom
to reproach, which I could reach with a striver's effort?
That I may convey the deepest regret with great effort
لاlet not تُفسِدَنspoil ماwhat قَدalready تَأَكَّدَhas grown firm بَينَناbetween us
مِنof صالِحٍgoodwill خَطَراتُpassing thoughts ظَنٍّsuspicion فاسِدِill-founded
Let not what has grown firm between us be spoiled—
Do not corrupt what is confirmed between us
our goodwill—by passing thoughts of ill-founded suspicion.
With the suspicions of a corrupt thought
حاشاكِfar be it from you مِنfrom تَضيِيعِsquandering أَلفِa thousand وَسيلَةٍa bond
شَجِيَwas grieved العَدُوُّthe enemy لَهاover them بِذَنبٍfor a fault واحِدِsingle
Far be it from you to squander a thousand bonds—
Far be it from you to waste a cordial path
which grieved the enemy—for a single fault.
That an enemy has ruined with one misdeed
إِنif أَجنِهِI commit it خَطَأًby mistake فَقَدthen indeed عاقَبتَنيyou punished me
ظُلماًunjustly بِأَبلَغَwith something harsher مِنthan عِقابِthe punishment of العامِدِthe deliberate offender
If I committed it by mistake, then you have indeed punished me
If I've made a mistake, you've punished me
unjustly, more harshly than a deliberate offender is punished.
More severely than the punishment of the resolute
عوديreturn لِماto what أَصفَيتِنيهِyou sincerely gave it to me مِنَof الهَوىlove
بَدءاًat first فَلَستُfor I am not لِماto what كَرِهتِyou disliked بِعائِدِreturning
Return to the love you sincerely gave me
Return me to the passion you've purified in me
at first; for I shall not return to what you disliked.
For I'll not revert to what you've come to hate
وَضَعيand remove قِناعَthe veil السَخطِof anger عَنfrom وَجهِthe face الرِضاof favor
كَيماso that أَخِرَّI may fall down إِلَيهِbefore it أَوَّلَthe first ساجِدِone prostrating
And lift the veil of anger from the face of favor,
Remove the mask of displeasure from the face of contentment
so that I may fall before it, the first to prostrate myself.
So I may bow before it the first to prostrate
