I tell you that I am love-stricken,
I tell you now that I am deeply infatuated,
And many a tale is full of sorrows.
and how many a tale carries a multitude of sorrows.
وَأَنِّيand that I قَدْindeed جَفَانِيforsook me مَنْthe one who سَبَانِيcaptivated me

So passion cried, “Come to moaning!”
so passion called out: "Come to the moaning!"

Longing set the night of youthful dalliance against me,
Longing incited the night of youthful love against me,
And separation set the army of yearning against me.
and abandonment unleashed the army of yearning upon me.

So I sought release from what had afflicted me,
So I sought a way out from all that has afflicted me,
Through something that might keep sorrows away from me.
seeking that which might drive away my sorrows.

Then, when they wanted clear skies, he spoke words
Then, as they pleaded for clear skies, he spoke a word—
Eloquent, dazzling the understanding of the keen-witted.
an eloquent word that dazzles the minds of the brilliantly wise:

His palm overflowed with every bounty,

Just as it had flowed with running water.

So he gave his army drink—a thousand and a half—
He quenched the thirst of his army of fifteen hundred men,
And left an abundance such as those springs provide.
surpassing even the bounty of natural, flowing springs;

The trunk yearned when he parted from it,
And the palm-trunk wept in yearning when he departed from it,
For him, with the yearning of one bereft of its unborn young.
mourning for him like a mother grieving her lost child;

هَمَى هَمِّي وَأَشْجَتْنِي شُجُونِي
My refuge, O Messenger of God, truly,
O my refuge, O Messenger of Allah! Truly,
My care pours down, and my sorrows have grieved me.
my anxieties have poured forth, and my sorrows have engulfed me;
وَنَفْسِيand my soul وَهْيَwhich is لِيto me أَعْدَىthe fiercest عَدُوٍّenemy

تُحَارِبنِي فَهَلْ لِي مِنْ مُعِينِ
My soul, which is my fiercest enemy,
And my own ego—which is my most bitter enemy—
Wages war on me; is there any helper for me?
wages war against me; so is there anyone to come to my aid?
إِذَاif أَلْقَتْit hands إِلَيَّto me زِمَامَthe reins of طَوْعٍwilling obedience

If it hands me the reins in willing obedience,
If the world tosses me the reins of its obedience, I say:
Then be whatever you wish, O my world.
"Be whatever you wish to be, O my worldly life!

If you desire a connection with me, do not oppress
My heart; otherwise, leave me.
my heart; and if not, then leave me be."

I speak to my soul as it churns and rages
Like the sea’s waves that shake the ships:
like the tempestuous ocean waves that violently shake the ships:

for at what point in time have I ever been free of their envy?
