بِحُكْمِby virtue of اخْتَيِارٍchoice بَخْتِيَارٌBakhtiyar بِمَشْرِقِin the East
The explanation of his alluded-to name—so believe it:
The title hints at his nickname, believe it
Here is the revelation of his concealed name, so believe it:
By virtue of choice: Bakhtiyar, in the East.
By the judgment of my choice, he is Bekhtyar in the east
By the decree of choice, it is Bakhtiyar in the East.
فَذَاso this نِصْفُهُhalf of it بَخْتٌgood fortune وَلَوْand if كَانَwere لِيmine رَنَاwould gaze
إِلَيَّtoward me الذِيthe one whom أَهْوَىI love بِمُقْلَةِwith the eye of مُشْفِقِa compassionate person
So half of it is good fortune; were it mine, there would gaze
So half of it is Bekht, even if I had a glance
For its first half is luck (Bakht), and had it been mine,
at me the one I love, with a compassionate eye.
Towards whom I love with a tender glance
The one I love would have gazed at me with a compassionate eye.
وَلَوْand if كَانَwere لِيmine رَأْيٌjudgment وَذَاand this عَكْسُthe reverse of مَاwhat بَقِيremains
دَعَانِيcalled me إِلَىto رُشْدِيmy good sense فَلَمْso did not أََتَعَشَّقِI fall in love
And if I had judgment—and this is the reverse of what remains—
Even if I had an opinion and this is the opposite of what remains
And had I possessed judgment (Ra'y)—the reverse of what remains—
it would have called me to good sense, so I would not have fallen in love.
He called me to my righteousness, but I did not become infatuated
It would have called me to reason, and I would never have fallen in love.
دَعَوْتَyou called إِلَىto رُشْدٍright guidance وَدُمْتَand may you remain مُسَدَّداًrightly guided
وَأَنْتَand you عَلَىupon الْعَلْيَاءِlofty glory تَاجٌa crown بِمَفْرِقِon a head's parting
You called for right guidance; may you remain guided aright,
You called me to righteousness and remained steadfast
You called to reason, and may you remain forever guided,
and you are a crown upon the head of lofty glory.
And you are above the high ones, a crown at the parting
While you stand upon the heights, a crown upon the parting of the head.
