خَلَتِbecame empty الدِّيَارُthe dwellings مِنَof الْبُدُورِthe full moons السَّافِرَهْunveiled
فَوُجُوهُso the faces آمَالِيmy hopes لِذَلِكَbecause of that بَاسِرَهْgloomy
The dwellings stand empty of unveiled full moons.
The abodes are vacant of the traveling caravans,
The dwellings are devoid of the unveiled full moons,
So the faces of my hopes are gloomy because of that.
So the faces of my hopes for that reason are dejected.
And so the faces of my hopes are thereby sullen.
سَلَبَstripped away السُّرُورَjoy سُرَاهُمُtheir night journey عَنْfrom جُثَّتِيmy body
وَاجْتَثَّand uprooted أَوَّلَthe first مَاwhat رَجَوْتُI hoped for وَآخِرَهْand its last
Their departure by night stripped my body of joy,
Longing robbed the bliss from their bodies,
Their night departure stripped the joy from my body,
And uprooted the first and last of all I hoped for.
And uprooted the first and last of what I hoped for.
And uprooted the first of my hopes, and the last.
أَوْلَيْتُهُمْI gave them شَطْرَhalf الْفُؤَادِthe heart لأَِنْbecause دَنَوْاthey drew near
فَالآنَso now إِذْwhen وَلَّوْاthey turned away تَوَلَّوْاthey took possession of سَائِرَهْits remainder
I gave them half my heart because they drew near;
I gave them half of my heart when they came near,
I entrusted them with half my heart when they drew near,
So now that they have turned away, they have taken the rest of it.
So now when they have turned away, the rest has turned away.
But now, as they departed, they took away the rest.
أَمَرَcommanded الثَّوَىruin; death الزَّفَرَاتِthe sighs أنْto تُصْلِنَنِيthey scorch me
نَارَthe fire الْكَآبَةِof sorrow فَامْتَثَلْنَso they obeyed أَوَامِرَهْits commands
Ruin commanded the sighs to scorch me
The remains ordered the sighs to join me
My remaining behind commanded the heavy sighs to cast me
With the fire of sorrow, and they obeyed its commands.
To the fire of melancholy, so they obeyed its commands.
Into the fire of melancholy, and they obeyed its commands.
فَالْقَلْبُso the heart مِنِّيof mine خَافِقٌfluttering وَاللُّبُّand the mind
نِّيof mine (fragment) طَائِشٌdistraught وَالْعَيْنُand the eye مِنِّيof mine سَاهِرَهْsleepless
So my heart is fluttering, and my mind
Thus my heart quivers, and my mind is distraught,
Thus my heart is palpitating, and my mind
Is distraught, and my eye is sleepless.
And my eyes from me are sleepless.
Is bewildered within me, and my eyes are ever wakeful.
هَذَاthis وَبَرْقُand the lightning الشَّوْقِof longing لَيْسَis not بِخُلَّبٍdeceptive; rainless
مَاnot لاَحَit flashed إِلاَّexcept وَالْمَدَامِعُand the tears هَامِرَهْpouring down
All this—and the lightning of longing is no rainless flash:
And the lightning of passion is not subdued,
All this, and the lightning of longing is no deceptive flash,
It never flashes without tears pouring down.
If it flashes, my tears flow copiously.
For it never gleams but that the tears come pouring down.
