يَاO مَالِكِيmy master وَالْمُسْتَبِدُّand the absolute ruler بِسَائِرِيover all of me
وَالْمُرْتَدِيand the one wearing بِرِدَاءِin a robe عِزٍّglory بَاهِرِdazzling
O my master and absolute ruler of my whole being,
O my master, who holds absolute sway over my entire being,
And you who wear a robe of dazzling glory,
And who is adorned in a dazzling mantle of glory,
مَاhow كَانَwas أَخْلَقَنِيdeserving I was بِحَظٍّof a share وَافِرِplentiful
مِنْfrom بَحْرِthe sea بِرِّكُمُyour benevolence الْمَدِيدِvast الْوَافِرِabundant
How deserving I was of a plentiful share
How deserving I was of an abundant share
From the vast, abundant sea of your benevolence!
From the vast, overflowing sea of your benevolence.
أَشْكُوI complain لَوْif only أَنَّthat الذِّهْنَthe mind يَمْلِكُcontrols نَفْسَهُitself
حَتَّىso that أُمَيِّزَI distinguish بَاطِنِيmy inward self مِنْfrom ظَاهِرِيmy outward self
I would complain, if only the mind were master of itself,
I would complain, if only my mind possessed itself
So I could distinguish my inward self from my outward self.
So that I might distinguish my inner self from my outer.

My heart, O my refuge, has become empty
My heart has become, O my refuge, completely empty
Of ʿAmmūr's rancor toward him concerning al-ʿĀmir (the wording is uncertain).
Of the overflowing life that once made it thrive.
