My illness grew intractable, so I came to a master

    who surpassed Aristotle in medicine.

And I sought the pillar of eminence, our lord,

son of those who firmly founded guidance.

And I sought the absent one's rainclouds, who revived

in the West the timeworn abode of right guidance.

And I made for wealth's treasure, the foremost

of noble notables, the sea of generosity, Idris.

The sun of our deliverance; some of his radiance

    obliterates all that brings abasement.

A scion of Abd al-Ilah and the two Hasans,

and of the Legatee—they revealed his radiance as suns—

and of the Chaste One, the Messenger's daughter—may

God bless him—who gave his glory cups to drink.

Do not blame us for seeking him; indeed,

in him we have sought the successor of Jesus.

And him for whom feet, as they tread

upon his earth, surpass necks and heads.

Our delegation has hastened to you, O my lord,

O lord of the noble, dispeller of misery.

By your son, our neighbor, the well-pleasing Idris,

spare us the work of praise and blame.

And banish from us confusion and deception,

so perhaps we may see no grievous torment.

    And grant us gifts whose

flood of clear water surpasses the deep sea.

Give us the wine of wealth from you, until

we fear neither poverty nor bankruptcy.

And nourish us with food sweet with hopes,

that improves the chyle and the chyme.

And give us drink from cups of your kindness, and bestow

upon us a robe woven of favor.

And quench our inward heat with your bounty, with a draught

that leaves no lingering trace within our hearts.

Do not squander the steps by which we reached your

dwelling, the home of radiance that dispels ill fortune.

So we saw radiance spreading there,

and saw majesty seated there as a companion.

And peace from your servant, the son of Zakur,

forever held captive upon the tomb.

Fragrant is its scent, like the scent of your soil,

as long as glory holds your tomb as its lair.

And blessings upon Abu al-Qasim, the Chosen One,

who has bestowed sanctity upon you,

the most precious of all creation, through whom, O

pearl of the pure, you were precious.
