هَنِيئاًjoy to you هَنيئاًjoy to you بَعْدَمَاafter عَزَّbecame scarce مَهْنَأُcause for joy
وَهَبَّاتُand breezes لُطْفِkindness اللهِGod بِالرَّوْحِwith relief تَطْرَأُarrive
Joy to you, joy to you, after joy had grown scarce!
Congratulations, congratulations, now that the abode of glory is unattainable,
Congratulations, congratulations, after joyous occasions had grown scarce,
And breezes of God's kindness arrive with relief.
And the blessings of God's kindness visit my soul,
As the breezes of God's kindness arrive with comforting relief.
بِعَوْدِكَon your return يَاO شَمْسَsun العُلاَeminence بِالْحُلَىwith the adornments الأُلَىthat
عَهِدْنَاwe knew لبُرْجِfor the constellation السعْدِgood fortune بلْrather أَنتَyou أَضْوَأُbrighter
On your return, O sun of eminence, with the adornments that
With your return, O sun of eminence, with the most brilliant ornaments,
For your return, O sun of eminence, with the same original adornments
we knew in the constellation of good fortune—yet you are brighter,
We hoped for the tower of felicity—rather, you are more radiant,
We once knew in the constellation of fortune; nay, you are even brighter,
بِضَوْءِwith the light طُلوعِrising الشمسِthe sun بعْدَafter غُروبِهَاits setting
وَرَوْنَقِand the sheen صَقْلٍpolishing لِلظُّبَىfor sword blades حِينَwhen تَصْدَأُthey rust
with the light of the sun's rising after its setting,
With the light of the rising sun after its setting,
With the light of the sun ascending after its setting,
and the sheen of polishing sword blades when they rust.
And the sheen of a burnishing for youth when it loses its luster.
And the radiant polish of sword blades when they have rusted.
هَنِيئاًjoy to you بِعَوْدٍon a return وَهْوَand it is أَحْمَدُmore praiseworthy عِنْدَin the eyes of مَنْone who
هَوَاهُhis love نَظِيرِيone like me سُورَةَchapter الْحَمْدِPraise يَقْرَأُhe recites
Joy at a return, most praiseworthy to one
Congratulations on a return, which to one whose beloved
Congratulations on a return that is most praiseworthy to the one whose
who, like me in his love, recites the Chapter of Praise.
Is, like me, the surah of Praise, is most praised.
Love matches mine, as he recites the Chapter of Praise.
فَلاَso do not تَعْذِلُونِيreproach me إِنَّماonly اسْمِيَmy name هَانِئٌHani’ (one who congratulates)
لأَِهْنَأَto offer congratulations لاَnot أَنْفَكُّI cease دَهْرِيall my life أُنْشِئُI compose
So do not reproach me: my name is simply Hani’;
So do not blame me—my name is Happy
So do not blame me, for my name is indeed Hani,
to offer congratulations, I never cease composing all my life.
To congratulate, I do not cease, for my lifetime I compose poetry.
To share joy, I shall never cease composing verse throughout my life.
فَأحْمَدُso I give praise إِمَّاif ever يَقْتَضيcalls for الْحَمْدَpraise مُقْتَضٍa cause
وَأَشْكُرُand I give thanks أَلْطَافاًacts of kindness لِذِيto the possessor of اللُّطْفِkindness تَطْرَأُcome anew
So I give praise whenever a cause calls for praise,
So Ahmad either requires praise from the praised one,
Thus I offer praise whenever a circumstance demands praise,
and thank the Possessor of Kindness for favors that come anew.
Or I thank the gifts of the Kind One that visit me.
And I give thanks for the blessings from the Lord of Grace that unfold.
فَإِنْso if أَنَاI أَمْسَىhas become بَابُthe gate شُكْرِيَmy gratitude مُرْتَجىًhoped for
وَكُنْتُand I was كَمَنْlike one who أضْحَىhas become حَقِيراًcontemptible وَيَنْتَأُand thrusts himself forward
So if the gate of my gratitude has become sought after,
Thus, if I become a gateway for thanking that is hoped for,
For if the door of my gratitude were ever to be bolted shut,
and I were like one grown contemptible who thrusts himself forward,
And was like one who ends up despised and moaning,
And I became like one who turns lowly yet swells with arrogance,
فَلِمْthen why قَدْindeed قَطَفْتُI plucked القَوْلَspeech وَهْوَwhile it is مُنَوَّرin bloom ٌ
وَلِمْand why قدindeed عَلِمْتُI learned كَيْفَhow أُنْهِيI conclude وَأَبْدَأُand I begin
then why have I plucked speech while it is in bloom,
Why have I picked words that are illuminated?
Then why would I have plucked poetic speech while it is in full bloom,
and why have I learned how to conclude and begin?
And why have I known how to end and begin?
And why would I have learned how to conclude and how to begin?
