Indeed, the esteemed leader was borne,
The esteemed leader was carried,
The chosen leader has been borne aloft,
The chief of teachers, above people's heads.
The headmaster, held high above all other heads,
The master of teachers, carried upon the heads.

They weep for him—a precious one has passed away;
Weeping for his noble soul now departed,
Tears are shed for him, a precious soul departed,
Souls escort him to the graves.
His soul escorted by others to its grave.
As souls escort him to his grave.

Home from the circles of learning.

Recited while seated amongst the devoted.
Your Book to the seekers seated around him.

And grace him with the eternal bliss of Paradise,
For he used to gladden those beset by misfortune.
For he brought joy to the gloomy souls,
For he brought happiness to those struck by misfortune.

بَكَيْتُكَI wept for you لَمَّاwhen مَضَيْتَyou departed حَمِيداًworthy of praise
بَكَيْتُكَ لَمَّا مَضَيْتَ حَمِيداً
وَعِشْتَand you lived غَنِيّاًrich بِدُونِwithout فُلُوسْmoney
وَعِشْتَ غَنِيّاً بِدُونِ فُلُوسْ
I wept for you when you departed, worthy of praise;
I wept for you when you passed away with dignity,
I wept for you when you departed, praiseworthy,
And you lived rich without money.
You lived enriched without any riches,
Having lived a rich life, though without worldly wealth.
وَرُمْتَand you sought وَلَمْand not أَسْتَطِعْI was able خُلْدَكُمْyour immortality

And you sought—and I could not secure—your immortality;
And you passed away before I could immortalize you,
I sought your immortality but could not attain it,
I immortalize your memory on the written pages.
But I immortalize your memory in poetry.
So I immortalize your memory upon these scrolls.
وَقُلْتُand I said لِطَالِبِto a seeker of مِثْلِكُمُyour like
وَقُلْتُ لِطَالِبِ مِثْلِكُمُ

تَعَزَّ فَلاَ عِطْرَ بَعْدَ عَرُوسْ
And I said to one seeking your like:
And I said to students like you,
And I say to anyone seeking another like you:
Take solace: there is no perfume after ʿArūs.
“Be dignified, for there is no finer fragrance than virtue.”
'Console yourself: there is no perfume after the bride.'
