    حَلاَّهُمُ الزَّمَانُ بِالْحِلْيَهْ

    Indeed, men have adorned the Hilya;

    time adorned them with adornment—

an adornment of guidance's rubies—and how

splendid it is, an adornment of the exalted!

God clothed them in a garment of guidance

when piety wrapped them in its attire.

And He inspired them with the pure wine of love,

and so they had extinguished its satiety.

What a people, who attained nobility,

when they rejected this world as they rejected fornication!

And they entrusted the matter to their Creator

and made His pleasure their treasured possession.

And they expended their strength on the command,

for they never came near a forbidden thing.

Their nourishment is remembrance of their Beloved,

and often the body is sustained by it.

Glory be to Him who generously gave them drink

from His bounty, a draught they found sweet!

Glory be to Him who, through renunciation, turned them

from this world's fleeting goods, beyond all doubt!

For this world's fleeting goods they hated; and in

the next world's splendors they have all they need.

For this world's fleeting goods, in their eyes,

are like a stinging scorpion or a snake.

Its passing through their minds for a moment

requires, in his reckoning, a ransom.

Yearn for the ruined traces of their love

    as Ghaylan yearned for Mayya.

Whoever hovers about love for them

gains protection from the taste of death.

Ask the All-Merciful through them; you will pluck from

His mercy your hopes and your desired aim.

    تَحْظَ بِهِمْ إِنْ كُنْتَ ذَا نِيَّهْ

    And seek God's pleasure through their standing;

you will find favor through them, if you have intent.

Whoever asks God through their standing,

God accepts his striving through them.

Indeed, a petition through their majesty

stands between the cutting and the knife.

Indeed, a petition through their rank

serves as a healing charm against every grief.

And hear the accounts of their miraculous gifts,

related by one who has knowledge.

Indeed, hearing of their glorious deeds

clothes hearts grown hard in reverent fear.

    Indeed, hearing of their virtues

    makes the afflicted one joyful.

Indeed, delighting in accounts of them

is—by their due honor—among the noblest desires.

By their standing with You, my Lord, and by him

who, when You willed them, garlanded them with adornment—

our Prophet, the best of creation, to whom

    Gabriel came in Dihya's likeness—

may the purest, everlasting blessing from You

be upon him as long as he bestows his guidance upon us.

Reward the one who set forth their qualities

in the Hilya with the garden of Firdaws:

    أَبُو نُعَيْمٍ نَاعِمُ النِّيَّهْ

    Abu Nuʿaym, who rose and was exalted;

    Abu Nuʿaym, gracious in intent;

    مُذْ حَسَّنَ اللهُ بِهِمْ وَشْيَهْ

    Abu Nuʿaym, who became fair

    since God beautified his embroidery through them;

    Abu Nuʿaym, who attained nobility—

may the All-Merciful grant him bliss through the vision.

And forgive us, O God, our Creator,

what transgression and slander have wrought,

and what we have committed through our idleness

and our frivolity, openly and in secret.

And grant the Commander of the Faithful victory over

whoever seeks to overwhelm them with his aggression.

And perpetuate his virtues, O God,

for they are a choice selection from the source of guidance.

And surround him, my Lord, with every radiance,

and let him drink the honey of the pool of wishes.

And guide his inner circle to success, O God,

and firmly set his judgment aright, our Lord.

    إِنَّ لَنَا فِِي رُشْدِهِمْ بِغْيَهْ

    And set right the nobles, our masters;

for we desire their right guidance.

And grant them high aspirations, O God,

as long as beauty is ascribed to the gazelle.

And the melodious reciter of the Hilya,

whose tones remove error from a thirsty heart,

and the inscriber of verse on their glory—

set them both right, and their kin and children.

And whoever kindles sorrow for the Muslims,

confine its heat to him alone, our Lord.

And whoever is sickened by hatred of them and boils over,

collar him, O Lord of the heights, with nausea.

And place the injurer's harm at his own throat,

and make him drink the colocynth of his own violence.

By the standing of creation's sun, our master

Muhammad, the purest of creation in intellect.

May God bless him as long as there rain down

the tears of peoples out of reverent fear,

and his family, companions, and their followers,

and all whom the books of the Hilya embrace.
