إِنَّindeed الذِيhe who حَازَcaptured مُهْجَتِيmy heart شَغَفاًwith passionate love
قَدْindeed لَجَّpersisted stubbornly فِيin هَجْرِهِhis estrangement وَمَاand did not عَطَفَاshow tenderness
Indeed, he who captured my heart in passionate love
Truly, he who seized my very soul with passion
has stubbornly persisted in estrangement and shown no tenderness.
Has stubbornly persisted in abandonment, showing no sympathy.
سَدَّدَaimed نَحْوِيtoward me سِهَامَarrows قَوْسِthe bow of جَفَاestrangement
حَسْبِيsufficient for me الإِلَهُGod مِنَagainst الْجَفَاestrangement وَكَفَىand He suffices
He aimed at me arrows from the bow of estrangement.
He aimed at me the arrows from the bow of cruelty;
God suffices me against estrangement, and He is enough.
God is sufficient for me against this harshness, and He suffices.
إِنْif كانَhe had أَبْهَجَنِيgladdened me غَداةَthe morning وَفَىhe kept faith
فَكَمْthen how often بَرَانِيwasted me away النَّحِيبُsobbing حِينَwhen جَفَاhe turned cold
If he gladdened me the morning he kept faith,
If he brought me joy on the morning he was faithful,
then how often sobbing wasted me away when he turned cold!
Then how much has weeping consumed me when he turned away.
سَلَّمَهُmay He keep him safe اللهُGod لاَnot أُعَاتِبُهُI reproach him
فَعَنْfor from سَبِيلِthe path of الْمِلاَحِthe beautiful ones مَاnot صَدَفَاhe strayed
May God keep him safe; I do not reproach him,
May God keep him safe, I do not reproach him,
for he has not strayed from the path of the beautiful.
For from the path of the beautiful ones he has not strayed.
وَلاَand not سَخِطْتُI resented الذِيthat which رَمَانِيhe struck me بِهِwith it
وَإِنْand even though كَسَانِيhe clothed me السَّقَامَsickness وَالدَّنَفَاand wasting illness
Nor have I resented what he struck me with,
Nor did I resent what he inflicted upon me,
even though he clothed me in sickness and wasting illness.
Even as he clothed me in sickness and wasting disease.
لَكِنْbut نَفَثْتُI breathed out الْغَرَامَpassionate love مُسْتَشْفِياًseeking healing
فَإِنَّfor indeed فِيin نَفْثِthe outpouring of ذِيone possessed of الْغَرَامِpassionate love شِفَاhealing
But I breathed out my passion, seeking healing,
But I breathed out my passion, seeking a cure,
for in a lover's outpouring there is a cure.
For in the sighs of the impassioned there is healing.
سَأَسْأَلُI shall ask الصَّفْحَpardon عَنْfor جِنَايَتِهِhis offense
إِنْeven if صِرْتُI come to be مِنْهَاbecause of it عَلَىon شَفِيرِthe edge of شَفَاa brink
I shall seek pardon for his offense,
I shall ask forgiveness for his transgression,
even if, because of it, I reach the very brink.
Even if it brought me to the very brink of the abyss.
وَأَطْلُبُand I seek الصَّفْوَserenity مِنْfrom رِضَاهُhis favor فَقَدْfor indeed
جَنَيْتُI reaped مِنْfrom غَرْسِthe planting of هَجْرِهِhis estrangement التَّلَفَاruin
And I seek serenity in his favor, for I have
And I seek the pure grace of his approval, for I have
reaped ruin from the planting of his estrangement.
Reaped devastation from the planting of his estrangement.
يَاO غُصْنُbough يَاO بَدْرُfull moon عَطْفَةًsupple bending وَسَناًand radiance
يَاO ظَبْيُgazelle يَاO شَمْسُsun خِلْقَةًin form وَصَفَاand clarity
O bough in suppleness, O full moon in radiance,
O branch, O full moon, in swaying grace and radiance,
O gazelle in form, O sun in clarity,
O gazelle, O sun, in perfect form and purity,
أَصْلَيْتَنِيyou made me burn بِنَارِwith the fire of الصُّدُودِrejection نَارَthe fire of الأَسَىsorrow
هَبْgrant لِيto me مِنَfrom الْوَصْلِunion جَنَّةًa paradise أُنُفَاfresh and untouched
with rejection's fire, you made me burn in sorrow's fire.
You scorched me with the fire of rejection, the fire of sorrow,
Grant me, through union, a pristine paradise.
So grant me from our union an untouched paradise.
