قَضَّيْتُI fulfilled مَاwhat وَعَدَpromised التَّلاَقِيthe meeting
وَكَانَand was وَعْدُهُits promise مَأْتِيَاfulfilled
I fulfilled what the meeting had promised,
I have fulfilled what was promised by our meeting
I have fulfilled what our meeting had promised,
And its promise came to pass:
And his promise was destined to come
And its promise was always bound to come.
أَنْthat أَصْطَلِيI burn in نَارَfire الْفِرَاthe separa- (part of 'separation')

That I should burn in the fire of separa-
That I quench the fire of separation
That I should burn in the flames of separation,
tion; so it was inevitably decreed.
So it was inevitably fulfilled
Which was an absolute, inevitable decree.
اَلْبَيْنُseparation هَيَّجَstirred صَبْوَتِيmy passionate longing
وَأَعَادَand returned لُبِّيَmy mind مَسْبِيَاcaptive
Separation stirred my passionate longing
The distance stirred up my passion
Parting has awakened my fervent yearning,
And made my mind captive once more.
And made my determination a captive
And taken my mind captive once again.
وَالْبَيْنُand separation أَضْرَمَkindled لَوْعَتِيmy burning anguish
وَأَصَارَand made قَلْبِيmy heart مَكْوِيَاseared
And separation kindled my anguish
And the distance caused my agony to blaze
Parting has set my anguish ablaze,
And left my heart seared.
And made my heart roasted
And left my heart branded and seared.
وَالْبَيْنُand separation صَبَّرَmade endure مُقْلَتِيmy eye

And separation made my eye endure
And the distance disciplined my love
Parting has condemned my eyes
Weeping blood, in cruel excess.
To shed tears excessively
To weep tears of blood in cruel excess.
وَبِعَادُand the absence of مَالِكِthe master of مُهْجَتِيmy soul

And the absence of my soul’s master
And the absence of my beloved
And the estrangement of the master of my soul
Has become fatal to my innermost heart.
Made my eyes shed tears all night
Has become fatal to my very core.
وَمُعَذِّبِيand my tormentor بِعَذَابِwith the torment of مَنْone who

And as for my tormentor, who gives me the torment of one
And my tormentor, with the torment of one
And my tormentor inflicts the agony of one
Who has professed no acceptable faith—
Who never professed a satisfactory religion
Who professes no acceptable faith.
قَدْindeed قُلْتُI said عِنْدَat وَدَاعِهِhis farewell
يَوْمَon the day of الرَّحِيلِdeparture تَمَنِّيَاwishfully
Indeed, I said when bidding him farewell,
I had said, on the day of his farewell,
I said at the moment of his farewell,
On the day of departure, wishfully:
On the day of departure, longingly:
On the day of departure, uttering a wish:
يَاoh لَيْتَنِيwould that I قَبْلَbefore الْوَدَاthe fare- (part of 'farewell')
عِ-well (completes 'farewell') كُنْتُI had been نَسْياًa forgotten thing مَنْسِيَاforgotten
Oh, would that, before the fare-
Oh, if only before the farewell
Oh, would that I, before this farewell,
well, I had been a thing forgotten, utterly forgotten!
I had been completely forgotten
Had been a thing forgotten, utterly forgotten.
