صَبَرْتُI endured لِلصَّدِّin the face of rejection حَتَّىuntil عِيلَwas exhausted مُصْطَبَرِيmy patience
وَضِقْتُand I grew constrained ذَرْعاًin endurance بِمَاby one who أَرْبَىsurpassed عَلَىabove الْقَمَرِthe moon
I bore rejection until my patience was spent.
I endured the rejection until my patience was utterly exhausted,
And I was overwhelmed by one who outshone the moon.
And I grew overwhelmed by one who surpasses the moon in beauty.
لَجَجْتُI persisted فِيin حُبِّهِlove for him فَلَجَّso he persisted فِيin ضَرَرِيharming me
مَنْwho مُنْصِفِيwill do me justice فِيagainst سَقِيمِlanguid الْجَفْنِthe eyelid ذِيpossessing حَوَرِstriking black-and-white eyes
I persisted in loving him, so he persisted in harming me.
I persisted in loving him, and he persisted in my ruin.
Who will do me justice against the languid-lidded one with eyes of vivid black and white?
Who will grant me justice against the one with languid, intensely dark eyes,
رَكِبْتُI embarked upon بَحْرَthe sea الْهَوَىpassion فِيهِfor him عَلَىat غَرَرِperil
أَسْتَغْفِرُI seek forgiveness from اللَّهَGod قُلْتُI said قَوْلَةًan utterance عَظُمَتْwas grave
For him I sailed the sea of passion at my peril.
I rode the sea of passion for him at great peril.
I seek God's forgiveness: I uttered a grave remark.
I seek God's forgiveness; I have uttered a grievous word,
جَاشَتْsurged forth بِهَاwith it لَوْعَةُthe anguish of الْحُبِّlove التِيwhich اضْطَرَمَتْblazed
بَلْrather مَالِكِيmy master عَادِلٌjust حَالِيmy condition بِهِthrough him انْتَظَمَتْbecame ordered
The burning anguish of love surged forth with it.
Provoked by the anguish of a love that had fiercely flared up.
Rather, my master is just; through him my condition was set right.
Rather, my master is just; through him my state is set right.
ظَبْيٌa gazelle لَهُhe has صُورَةٌa form فِيin الْحُسْنِbeauty قَدْindeed قُسِمَتْwas apportioned
بَيْنَbetween الْكَثِيبِthe sand dune وَبَيْنَand between الْغُصْنِthe bough وَالزَّهَرِand the blossoms
A gazelle whose beautiful form has been apportioned
A gazelle whose beautiful form has been apportioned
Between the sand dune, the bough, and the blossoms.
Between the sand dune, the supple branch, and the blossom.
يَاO صُورَةًform عَلَّهَاgave it a second draught الْحُسْنُbeauty وَأَنْهَلَهَاand gave it a first draught
لَوْif أَوْرَدَتْit led to water مُهْجَةَthe heart of اللَّهْفَانِthe yearning one مَنْهَلَهَاits watering place
O form that beauty has given draught after draught!
O image that beauty has nourished with first and second draughts,
Had it led the yearning one's heart to its watering place,
If only it would bring the desperately longing soul to its spring,
مَاhow كَانَwould have been أَجْمَلَهَاbeautiful it is مَاhow كَانَwould have been أَكْمَلَهَاperfect it is
آلَتْswore لَوَاحِظُهُhis glances أَنْthat لاَnot يَعِيشَshall live لَهَاin their presence
How beautiful it would have been, how perfect!
How exquisitely beautiful it is, how perfectly complete!
His glances have sworn that none shall survive them—
His glances have sworn that none shall survive them,
صَبٌّa lovesick lover وَلَوْand even if أَنَّهُthat he فِيin قَسْوَةِthe hardness of الْحَجَرِstone
No lovesick lover, even were he as hard as stone.
No infatuated lover, even if he were as hard as stone.
