How long will they strike me with their brown arrows—

the black calamities—and assault me with their left hand?

All this, though I have sought the sanctuary

of one who sheltered those exposed to their arrowheads:

my lord Idris, son of Idris, son of him

before whom lions bowed in their thickets—

    Abd al-Ilah al-Kamil, son of al-Murtada,

Hasan al-Muthanna, possessor of gifts, lavish in bestowing them,

son of him who gathered every glory,

Hasan of al-Batul, brother of eminence and its crescent,

grandson of the Hashimite Messenger, Muhammad,

best of creation, chosen from among its princes.

May God bless him as long as rain pours down

    and winds rise at evening,

and all his family and companions, those who

followed guidance and climbed its mountains.

My lord, O son of those who raised glory high

and charged the champions on the day of combat,

free your humble protégé from snares that have set

knives lapping at him, leaving him bound to their warfare.

For it is surely required—indeed incumbent, my master—

that you rescue the captive from their chains.

I know you to shelter whoever seeks refuge with you

from every terror of theirs that he fears.

Why should one who has become a guest at your abode

find terrors stretching their black ropes toward him?

If his conduct once went wrong, then those who

were lords and gave freely—pardon is the treasure among their virtues.

Who among mankind has never done wrong,

least of all one who, like me, is distraught?

O refuge of the anguished and afflicted, O

help of the wretched against enemies and their harm,

hasten the bounty I have hoped for from you,

O Kaaba of the hopeful in their hopes.

O champion of my hopes, in you, for the thirsty,

a river of wishes has overflowed with their clear, sweet water.

What harm were you to quench the burning thirst of their heart

from its flood, and relieve me of their plight?

Others drink deeply from the clear channels of wishes

through your bounty, while I choke on their plight.

This is an unjust division; far be it from your majesty

to wrong your servant with anything like it.

He was surely more deserving of wishes, having drawn near,

than one far away—and of sipping the lips of their fulfillment.

By your father—a means of approach that leaves no doubt

of its acceptance—how great the honor of its men!

And by those gone before, noble men or ascetics,

or those who bereaved battle of its champions,

every bright-faced, virtuous man of overflowing bounty,

a star of guidance, poison to enemies and their deadly venom,

high of summit, lavish in hospitality, a lion of al-Shara,

mankind's refuge from what befalls it, and its protector—

do not hold me accountable for what I committed

in youth, of its waywardness and error.

For through it I slighted the rights of your protection

and strayed from the paths of piety and its shade.

And I galloped the horses of idleness, heedlessly,

among the blossoms of passion and its vipers.

But now, O axis of creation, I have unsaddled them,

and devoted my utmost earnest effort to abandoning them.

And I demolished what I built in the days of youth

in the heights of sin or amid its ruins.

    And I forsook Su'da, al-Rabab, and 'Azza,

and restrained my soul from its ugly disputation.

And my soul yearned for the dates of piety,

and I turned from passion's doum fruit and its unripe dates.

Then fulfill my hope and grant my need,

O fulfiller of needs before they are requested.

And guard my father in an absence that has borne him far away,

and protect him from separation's ghoul and its havoc.

Shelter him wherever he stays, and hasten his return,

and grant him wealth's overflowing abundance by the bucketful.

And intercede for us on Resurrection Day, so that perhaps we

may be among those delivered from its terrors.

O branch of a root that rose above the heavens,

and son of those granted reason in its fullness,

and upon your exalted station be my greeting,

as long as a gray dove repeats its songs:

more fragrant than blossoms perfumed by rain

and carried by winds in their trailing hems.

Then blessings upon the chosen Messenger,

the best of creation, its sun and crescent,

and his family and companions, as long as an east wind blows

and the hills' branches droop in their north wind.
