Give thanks to Mandusa, best of the best,

among all knights of verse and prose,

and the cream of the noble lords among al-Andalus's notables

    and their celebrated, eloquent speakers.

The heights of the noble have drawn him upward through

time's passing and the renewal of the ages.

And his presence on Tetouan's heights, his rising-place,

as a full moon of eminence granted her the finest light.

So he proved the finest poet among those who follow a path

of verse, sound and never forsaken.

Then match him on the path of speech, with measured pace,

verse for verse, fine composition for fine composition.

And reward him for verse that was a radiance from him

    for one entering a tunnel beneath pitch-dark night's wing;

and a gift from a beloved, not expected

by his lover, burning in an outcast's fires.

Is that the clearest likeness for your praise of me,

or the coolest sweet water, healing a fevered heart,

and ample ease after hardship, attained

by a father of frail, broken daughters?

So may God repay you, not my verse and artifice,

for gracious praise that is never unacknowledged.

Indeed, you are the man who offered scattered pearls

on an ordered thread to Ibn Zakur,

who fills bags with his deeds, made foul

by vice in secret, with zeal and strenuous effort.

And at times he flaunts indecency, following

the path of one who forsakes God's abode and the houris.

Learning did not benefit him when he acquired it

through study for himself, not for God—it brought no light.

Thus the freshness of ornamented sayings

in a mind put at risk for every forbidden thing

is only like the bloom of a lifeless body

among bodies, and a wall enclosing nothing.

Go on, may you be guided! Poetry's pearls are the most precious thing

offered to an accomplished scholar of verse.

With that, you have indeed given the bow to its maker,

and the steed to the one who races it among the crowds,

and the keen sword to one who strikes warriors' heads with it,

and raw gold to the master of the assayers of dinars,

and musk to one without a cold, while there rose

from it potent fragrances that heal every ailing chest.

No wonder that, when you have garlanded us with favors,

we offer thanks for them, unavoidably falling short.

For you are the supreme orator among all the people of this age,

passing judgment on them through advancement and demotion.

Before you—you are the lion—they, terrified

by the roar of your verse, are like cats.

They mew, seeking a share of your dust in

the race for eminence—what is a cat's mew beside a roar?

May God shelter you from the envier's eye; then strike

the envier's eye with nail-like things,

from your conduct, clothed in every virtuous deed

that moves the eminent to honor and respect.

For you are a giver of kindness that is never unacknowledged,

and a sworn ally of beneficence, deeply appreciated.

So may God spare you the oppressive hand of a wrathful man

who has never reckoned with a watcher over destinies.

And may God raise you up, or keep you watchful

over the foes, for they are the worst of the wicked.

And may God guard you in your striving, clothed

in protection from everything forbidden and feared.

And may God make support your companion, as you hold fast

to God's might through ages upon ages.
