يا صاح إن الدهر صاعد برهة

فغدا الزمان لحسنها محساد

O friend, time rises for a while;

and time became deeply envious of its beauty.

يدوم على نهر الجواهر مفرد

من حسنه شفى به الأنكاد

It endures beside the river of jewels, unmatched;

through its beauty, afflictions found healing.

واد فكأنه محفة من فضة

أو ما قد صاغه الأهناد

A valley, as though it were a palanquin of silver,

or something the Indians have fashioned.

شق البسيطة صاون يزبرجد

رقمت جوانب سوحه الأبراد

It cleft the earth—[unclear]—with peridot [uncertain reading].

Mantles embroidered the edges of its open grounds.

مع فتية فتنوا بحسن وجوههم

قلب السجي فغاب عنه مراد

With young men whose handsome faces bewitched

the tranquil one's heart, and purpose deserted him.

هب النسيم فحركت نفحاته

منا القلوب ويان فينا رشاد

The breeze blew, and its wafts stirred

our hearts, and [unclear] sound judgment among us.

ريح الصبا حنت إلينا تذيقنا

طعم السلو وما لديها نفاد

The east wind yearned toward us, letting us taste

the flavor of solace, which it supplies without end.

والنهر الجوانب ضاحك

عن ثغر در ما له أنداد

And the river smiles along its banks,

revealing a mouth of pearls without equal.

يهدي السرور بجمعنا ويؤمنا

كاسات راح صاغها الأمجاد

It offers joy amid our gathering, and toward us come

cups of wine fashioned by the noble.

لله يوم قد تضاحك فجرة

وتشبهت بسروره الأعياد

God be praised for a day when sinners laughed together,

and festivals modeled themselves on its joy.
