لن تنالَ العلا بشكرٍ عَريبِ

لن تنالَ العلا بشكرٍ عَريبِ

مثلَ شكرِ الحرِّ الشريفِ الأديبِ

مثلَ شكرِ الحرِّ الشريفِ الأديبِ

You will not attain eminence through ʿArīb’s thanks

as through the thanks of a free man, noble and cultured.

إنما تُبذَلُ اللُّهى لابتغاء ال

إنما تُبذَلُ اللُّهى لابتغاء ال

حمدِ في سدِّ خَلَّةِ المنكوبِ

حمدِ في سدِّ خَلَّةِ المنكوبِ

Bounties are bestowed only to seek

praise by meeting the stricken person’s need,

ليس في الباذلات مُكتسبَ الأمـ

ليس في الباذلات مُكتسبَ الأمـ

ـوالِ في كسبِ موبقاتِ الذُّنوبِ

ـوالِ في كسبِ موبقاتِ الذُّنوبِ

not on women who spend acquired wealth

in earning sins that bring ruin.

كلُّ وَفْرٍ يفنى ويبقى من الصَّا

كلُّ وَفْرٍ يفنى ويبقى من الصَّا

حبِ حسنُ الثناءِ للمصحوبِ

حبِ حسنُ الثناءِ للمصحوبِ

Every fortune perishes, but from a companion there remains

fine praise for the one he accompanies.
