You thanked me for my praise of you when it preceded your bounty,

and said, “You have given us praise and thanks in advance.”

What you said so delighted me that it swept me away,

as though music—or wine—had set my sides swaying.

No people but you have thanked a praise-poet,

or held that bounty should precede poetry.

The surviving sons of kings, by your honor,

say such gracious things as you said, nothing base.

And you have always made ears ring

with things that banish deafness from their hearing.

Had you given me only your words, they would have been to me

a generous gift, neither small nor scant.

And you have been granting us abundant benefits:

    sometimes knowledge, and sometimes wealth.

Is it not enough for you to drive out poverty alone

from people, that you must drive out ignorance and poverty?
